Nicole woke up and knew something was wrong. She looked over to see that Brian had already left for work. She slowly sat up and eased her body out of the bed. The room was freezing! Why had she never noticed that the room was this cold? She went to check the thermometer. It was 40 degrees in this room! It no wonder her and Brian hadn’t frozen to death. It was then that she remembered that she shouldn’t feel the cold. She was dead.
She quickly threw on a sweater and a pair of jeans and left the apartment.
The feel of the Los Angeles sun was shining down on her and she soaked up the warmth through every pore. She drove to Julian’s house. Maybe the Ancient could tell her what was wrong.

“Nicole. How lovely to see you” Julian said as he opened the door to let her in.
“Julian, I’m afraid this is a medical visit and not a social one.” She said seriously. Julian nodded his head and led her to the examining room.
He began to examine her body. He placed his hands on her abdomen and he sensed it. Nicole was with child. Noticing the look on Julian’s face Nicole became worried.
“Tell me! What is it Julian?” She asked in panicked voice.
“Nicole….you are with child” Julian said solemnly.
“That’s impossible” Nicole said sitting up.
“No. Not impossible, just rare” Julian replied.
“But Beth was newly turned when she became pregnant. I’ve been a vampire for two years!”
“And yet it is still true” Julian said sadly.
“Well, this is unexpected, but it’s still good news right?” Nicole asked anxiously.
“I fear Nicole that Lucifer may have a hand in this.”
“What are you saying Julian?”
“I think you know my dear. You are now carrying the devil’s seed”

Nicole tried to understand what Julian was telling her, but it seemed so…..impossible. Did Lucifer truly have that kind of power? Surely there had to be a more medical explanation.
“Julian, look. I’m trying to understand all this. There is no other explanation. Medical-wise for this?” She said.
“There have been only three recorded vampire births and all three including Beth’s were because of one vamp being newly made. As you have been in your vampiric for some time then we must look elsewhere. I understand that Lucifer promised you a child”
“Yes, but Brian said to not believe anything he said” Nicole said quietly.
“It seems that Lucifer’s plan to resurrect his son has been changed to the known biblical way. Through a surrogate. You Nicole are his vessel” Julian said shaking his head.
Nicole jumped off the table.
“I won’t have it!” She screamed. “You will just have to get it out of me!” She said.
“That I can not do” Julian said.
“Why not? Why can’t you do this?” Nicole said hardly believing that Julian was saying no!
“As a disciple of God, this I can not do”
“Oh no! Don’t lay that crap on me Julian! There has to be some way!” She said with tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I’m afraid it is now in the hands of God” he said and walked out of the room.

Who knew? A pro-life vampire!

I must admit, the timing is suspicious to say the least, but there is no guarantee that Lucifer's child resides inside the womb of Brian's wife. Oh, Balthazar...

Can they draw a sample of the amniotic fluid and run a paternity test?

Julian then called Balthazar.

Brian received the call shortly after.
“Mr. Petzer I’m afraid we have some troubling news for you.” Julian said slowly trying to find the correct way to phrase the words.
“What is it Julian?”
“It’s your wife……she is with child” Julian said.
“What?!” Brian exclaimed. “How is this possible?”
“Lucifer” Julian said. He could feel the energy of Brian’s anger immediately.
“Where is my wife?” He demanded.
“She is here sir and she is quite upset” Julian said.
Brian hung up the phone and went to Josef.
“Sir, we have a problem” Brian said “Nicole is pregnant”
Josef looked up suddenly. He knew that Lucifer would find a way to have what he wanted.
“Lucifer” Josef said. Brian nodded.
“Where is Nicole now?” Josef asked standing up.
“She is with Julian” Brian said.
“Then let’s go” He said waling towards the door.

Julian’s small home was alive with conversation and speculation. Mick, Beth, Isabelle, Gabriel, Zoe, Josef, Balthazar and Brian were all at Nicole’s side.

“Are we sure that the child is Lucifer’s? “ Zoe asked.
Julian nodded.
“Yes, the essence of evil grows within her” He said to all around him.
Brian closed his eyes and let his Dragos bloodline focus on the baby growing inside his wife.
“The child is Lucifer’s” he said. Nicole wailed as Zoe held her tight.
“Okay” Gabriel said finally speaking. “So we know the child is Lucifer’s, but what needs to be done? I don’t know anything of the bible so this is all new to me. Perhaps new to most of us here”
Balthazar closed his eyes briefly.
“The Book of Revelation has foretold the birth of a child. A male child that will be raised in a family of wealth and power. Through that family this child will become a political ruler that will establish control over the whole earth. He'll be backed up with a religious ruler, who's called the false prophet. They together establish a unified social, economic and religious system that dominates the world.”
“Why can’t we just…….I’m sorry Nicole, but abort the child if this is what the child will come to” Gabriel said. Brian walked over to Nicole and kneeled at her feet.
“Because Nicole would be no more. Lucifer would see to that” He said sadly.
“Wait!” Zoe said suddenly. “You’re forgetting the most important part of Revelation. Evil doesn’t win.”
“That is true. But so many lives will be lost.”
“No, what I’m saying is this. Brian won over Lucifer before by having faith. Who says that this child if brought up in that environment would become the opposite of that?”
“What you say is interesting” Balthazar said looking at Zoe with admiration.

I wonder why I think that the answer to this riddle came earlier in this story.

“What we first need to do is secure Nicole in a safe location.” Beth said.
“Beth is right.” Josef answered. “Vienna worked out well for Gabe’s birth”
Brian nodded.
“I agree. She will be much safer on Counsel grounds. We shall leave at once.”


Zoe had finished packing her bags and turned to look at Gabriel.
“I will miss you” she said quietly.
“I’ll miss you too, but they need you and Julian in Vienna.” He replied.
Zoe walked up him and threw her arms around his neck.
“Wish me luck honey” She whispered in his ear.


Three weeks had passed and Nicole grew large with each passing day. She could consume a little food along with blood, but she seemed happy and in good spirits. Helmut and Julian tended to her daily to make sure she was she was not in harm’s way. She called Brian everyday just to hear is voice and to sometimes tell him how sorry she was that she allowed herself to believe the words of Lucifer.

Brian studied the Bible with Balthazar for hours each day. He was determined to end this once and for all.


Lucifer sat in his home sipping a glass for blood.
“You know I shall win this time” Lucifer said to his guest.
“What I know is that nothing is ever certain in this life. Change happens. And it can be profound”
Lucifer waved his hand in disgust.
“Mankind remains the same. Even after all this time. Your plan has failed” Lucifer said.
“We shall both see” His guest replied before vanishing.

Zoe and Julian read through every scroll they could get their hands on, looking for some clue they could use to thwart Lucifer’s attempts, but Zoe knew in her heart that love was only thing that could demolish evil.

Nicole was becoming restless. Zoe tried to calm her down.
“Come Nicole. Let’s walk in the gardens” Zoe said gently. She knew that once Nicole saw the beautiful gardens, she would open up.
“It is so beautiful here” Nicole said at last.
“Yes it is” Zoe said not wanting to interrupt her.
“My parents are intellectuals. They don’t believe in organized religion”. Nicole began to explain.
“Not believing in something doesn’t wipe out its existence” Zoe said quietly. Her family had always been devoutly religious, so like Balthazar and Julian, she felt there was not other way for her.
“Yeah, I know…..it’s just I wonder what will happen to them when they find out they were wrong?”
“If it does indeed come to that, I hope with all my heart that mankind continues to love, more than anything else.”
“You really believe that love is all that is needed?”
“Yes I do Nicole. With all my heart.” Zoe said with a big smile.
“Can I have a piece of your heart?” Nicole joked.
Zoe placed her hand on Nicole belly.
“You will have more than enough love in your heart for the little one that’s inside. So much in fact, it will change the world” Zoe said.

Unfortunately, history is filled with examples where love did not ensure a happy ending with everything nicely wrapped up with a pink ribbon and rainbows.

I only hope that love will change the destiny of this child.

There is nature and nurture. DNA does not have the last word. Lucifer may have decided his genetic makeup, but he did not contribute a soul.

Brian walked into Counsel and was immediately met by Helmut.
“My Lord! Welcome!” Helmut said,
“I’ve come to see my wife” Brian said not sure how she would receive him.
“Do not worry Brian” Helmut said patting him on the back. “She will be fine” He said leading him to where Nicole was.

Nicole saw Brian walk in, tall, quiet and confident. She said nothing but waited for him to come to her. He walked slowly towards her then bent down on his knees and kissed her protruding stomach.
“I love you” He whispered as if speaking directly to the baby.
Nicole ran her hands through his hair and held is head tightly.

Brian and Nicole talked about everything. From schools to names. Each topic brought a new flush in Nicole cheek’s as she thought of herself as a mother. And she would be a good one too. She swore it.
They lie together for some time when Nicole felt the sharp pain to her abdomen. She tried to sit up but found herself unable to. Brian quickly stood up.
“I will fetch Helmut” he said quietly with a smile.

Helmut ran all around Counsel waking everyone.
“Come! It is time” He said.

Julian went to examine Nicole and saw that she was indeed in labor. He crossed himself and said a silent prayer for everyone. As God was his witness, he did not want to deliver this child, but would do so.
Balthazar laid a hand gently on his shoulders.
“Do not worry Julian. The light of God shines in you, as it always will” He said. Julian nodded his head and prepared Nicole for delivery.

Brian stood at Nicole side holding her hand as she screamed and pushed. Zoe pressed a wet cloth to her forehead and pressed ice to her parched lips.

Nicole continued to push.
“That’s it Nicole just once more!” Julian said as he saw the head.
Nicole pushed with all her might.

Lucifer heard the baby’s cry and smiled to himself. Soon his son would take over the world!

“Julian looked at the baby as he wiped it clean. He looked at Balthazar and back to the baby. Balthazar came over to him.

Nicole dazed and exhausted from the delivery looked over at the two Ancients. She knew something was wrong with her child. It was hideous! It was deformed!
“What wrong with my baby?!” She screamed. “What wrong with him?!” She cried.
Zoe walked over and looked at the infant. She smiled and looked at Brian.
“The prophecy was broken” She said laughing.
“What do you mean?” Brian asked.
“You have a beautiful healthy baby girl!” Julian said. Brian and Nicole looked at each other in surprise. They had read all the scriptures. The child should have been a boy!
“Are you sure?” Brian asked
Zoe rolled her eyes at him.
“Do you really think I don’t know a girl baby when I see one silly?” She said still laughing. Julian wrapped the baby up in a warm blanket and placed it Nicole’s arms. The baby was beautiful. She had dark hair and dark eyes.

Lucifer knocked on the door and let himself in.
“Ahh….my son! I heard his cries the moment he was born” He said seductively. “You have done well Nicole” He continued as he walked near the baby. “What a……” Lucifer turned around. “What is the meaning of this?” He thundered.
“Love has beaten you again Lucifer” Zoe said boldly.
How could this be? Lucifer thought. The child should have been a boy!
“Next time Mr. Petzer! Next time!!!” Lucifer yelled and vanished from site.

“I don’t understand…” Brian said.
“Your love for Nicole and for the child, even though it was not your own, was seen in the eyes of God as a sacrifice. That you would love a child 100% in spite of its destiny tells that mankind is not lost.” Balthazar said.

Nicole looked at Brian.
“It was your kiss” she said happily. “God Bless you Brian” she cried.

Brian scooped up Mila so she could look at the little baby sleeping her crib.
“What is her name Brian?” Mila asked.
“Abigail” Brian said.
“That is Hebrew for father rejoicing” Mila said with a smile.
Brian laughed at the little girl.
“Yes it is smarty pants” He said ticking her belly Mila squirmed in his arms.
“Are you Uncle Brian? Are you rejoicing?”
Brian stared at the sleeping baby in the crib.
“Yes I am Mila.” He said with tears in his eyes.
