Lovely reread of this charming little glimpse of Beth's entry into the wide world of college.

We all knew at least one person like Caroline. The rapport between Beth and her Mom is wonderful. You give us enough to tell us that the relationship was warm, nurturing and close. Carl's appearance is a lovely touch, as is his immediate attraction to the superficial, somewhat vapid Caroline.

Then, Mick's appearance--he was watching out for Beth here, too.

Beth's in college in the same dorm as Carl! That should explain lots of things! I loved the dorm atmosphere with roomies, bad a/c, people coming and going and worried mom in the middle, but I absolutely adored crafty Mick in plain sight checking out on Beth! How come she noticed how handsome Carl looked and not Mick?
