Resolute (Champagne Challenge #134) -- PG-13

Post by librarian_7 »

This is an answer to Challenge #134, the surprise drabble challenge. Usual disclaimers…

Resolute

Lance will kill him if I don’t do something. It’s in his eyes.

What can I offer? Only myself.

“…I’ll go with you… but you have to leave him out of this.”

I know what I’m doing.

“Kneel. Kneel down.”

My knees hit the pavement, and I send up prayers to a God I think has forgotten me, long ago. Mick is hurt, lying still, but his eyes are open. He sees me, he knows. He lives.

“If you take me to him, you know what will happen.”

This isn’t sacrifice, it’s resolution. It’s love.

“You've made your choices, sister.”

Oooh... this one gives me chills. You could see this in her eyes when she allowed Lance to stake her. She watched Mick the whole time... she did it for him, and she knew that he knew what she was doing. That's love... and that's Coraline. She never did anything for just one reason, did she? She always had an agenda, or three. But that didn't make the emotions any less real. :hearts: :rose: Great response to the challenge.

This moment is pivotal. Potentially huge.

Mick's actions later indicate that he didn't believe any of it, but was still trapped in his bitterness and anger over the events of his Turning. I guess that is to be expected. But Coraline put herself in Lance's hands for to save Mick. Earlier, she had asked him to go with her when she got out of town, he declined and she didn't press the issue. The fact that she let him make his own decision is also huge.

To be honest, in the past I considered this moment to be a scene from a play that was worked out beforehand to ne performed for Mick when the opportunity presented itself. However, if this was real, it opens up an entirely new set of possibilities

Somewhere in the last twenty six years, Coraline Duval has had an epiphany. She is now an ally.

Fabulous, Lucky!

Thank you!

This is exactly what I think went on in Coraline's mind. She still loved Mick and sacrificing herself for him was the last? act of love she could show him even though she was terrified.

This scene really caused me to rethink my opinion of Coraline. While I don't agree with all of the decisions she made regarding Mick, it is clear (to me) that she loved him. By offering herself to Lance, she showed Mick how deep her love for him ran. As they say, actions speak louder than words.

Wonderful answer to the challenge, Lucky! :hearts:

I think Coraline just couldn't bear to see Mick hurt. After all, she'd turned him, so that he'd never age or die, and considered it a great gift. That he differed, is sort of immaterial. She couldn't let Lance kill him, and she had to make a split second decision.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

I loved this look at Coraline's thoughts when she gave herself up to protect Mick! It's beautifully worded, and I love that she really is so resolute, so firm in her decision, even though she knows what she will face because of it.

Fantastic work! :happysigh:

I can absolutely imagine this going thru Coraline's mind. Mick is her world and she won't let Lance destroy what she feels is hers.

She did it all for Mick. In a way, she redeemed herself in that moment, in my eyes, and maybe also in Mick's eyes. She knew what would happen and willingly took it.

I always felt this was so powerful because it was so true. Coraline would do anything for Mick.
