Pearl Harbor PG

I wrote this very short story for Guess The Author at 6 Degrees of Alex O'Loughlin. In honor of all those who died on that fateful day. I do not own any recognizable characters, no copyright infringement is intended.


Mick and Beth were parked outside the Visitors Center at 3A.

“I’m sorry to keep you up all night.”Mick said

“Don’t worry about it. It’s important.”

The center opened at 5:30A. Seats were on a first come, first serve basis. Mick was lucky enough to get seats on the 6:20A boat to Kilo Pier.

The ceremony began at 7:40A. At 7:55 there was a moment of silence as they honored the memory of those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor seventy years ago.

Beth put her arm around Mick. He was deeply moved by this ceremony.

“A date that will live in infamy.” Mick quoted. "I fought in Europe but it all started here. It changed this country as we know it. The first attack on American soil.”

Beth nodded. “Sadly not the last.”

“No. I was so young.The world was black and white, right or wrong. I had no idea how the world really worked.

Beth nodded. “It must be hard for you. Soon everyone who was alive then will be….

“Gone. That’s the price of immortality.” Mick looked around and saw a few frail old men. They had served in the war. Mick knew one day he would come to this ceremony and he would be the only WWII veteran remaining.

After the ceremony they went back to the Visitor Center and then they spent the day playing on Waikiki Beach.

This morning was for remembering the past. This afternoon was for the future. He had rescued Coraline and in return she completed the synthetic cure for him. He and Beth spent the day at the beach enjoying the sun instead of him having to run from it. Unfortunately the cure was only temporary and within six weeks it started to reverse itself. The good news was that it was long enough. He knew the blood cravings would start again in about a week but Beth had taken a home pregnancy test yesterday and the stick was blue.

He would always be a vampire but now he and Beth would have real immortality through their child.

He prayed that his son would never have to fight in a war.

I really like this story, it shows so much of what makes Mick the man he is.

That was beautiful and sad that Mick has seen the worst in man - in basically 2 lifetimes. However, I am glad he got the cure...what a thought - a GOOD thought. And the future WILL be brighter.

OH, this one was beautiful, historical past and fictional past together..Survival can be tough when those you care for, drifft away from you in so many ways...yet there is always hope for those who keep hoping. I loved the end..so much light in it.

It's hard for someone like Mick the last century has had a lot of sadness. I've seen Pearl Harbor although not this ceremony. There is really nothing that it can be compared to in my mind not even Ground Zero in NY. That's probably because I was there on that day.

Oh gosh, this is such a lovely story. It makes me miss my dad... he flew dive bombers in WWII. He and Mick were born in 1922, so they would turn 102 this year.

I love that you temper the sadness of this story with hope. A baby for the St. John's!
