Of course , he'll say it with an Aussie accent and we'll still be confused... :snicker:

You know, Malia Obama was named after Alex's Malia... so this name may commemorate someone too.
Hawaiians seem to put great stock into names... :rose:

When did the Obama's tell that story? (I'd love to hear the whole interview)

Well...look at it this way, Rhonda. It's a hell of a lot better than Spike.

If it's pronounced "Lee-On" or "Lee-Own" (I prefer the second), the kid's going to spend his whole life correcting people (something I sympathize with). I really REALLY hope it's not pronounced like it's spelled, because....wow.

well my first response was :confused2: What??? But then Alex's accent can make all the difference even if it's simply "Lion." :rose:

My kid sister has the name Rhoni. Pronounced like Ronnie. But people put all kinds of twists on it like Ra-ho-nee or Ra-hon-ee, Row-nee. The "h" messes with people.
But having to correct people builds character so Lion, Lee-on or Lee-own...he's gonna build some GREAT Character. :winky:

I can relate. People never pronounced my name wrong but it really irritated me when they left the "h" out. Now that I'm older I've learned to let that go. I even skip the "h" if there's clearly a language barrier on the telephone; it isn't worth the energy.

I think I'm adapting to the name Lion- especially when I realized that it was the meaning of so many other names. And this is a man who named his other son "Saxon" which isn't exactly common either.

Things have changed a lot in the last quarter century since I got into naming arguments with Mr. A. when we were expecting. Out-of-the-ordinary names aren't so uncommon now, especially among celebrities. Personally, I'm of the mind that a weird name might be an undue burden on the little guy. But he already lives an out-of-the-ordinary life. His name is only one aspect of that uniqueness. And hey, at least he won't be the only kid in the family with an ordinary name! :winky:

I was just reading comments. A few thought he would be teased mercilously...like calling him Lyin' Lion...they will roar at him... etc.

I dunno. I don't think it'll be a problem.

My son has just moved up to middle school from elementary school, so we're pretty up on the range of kid names out there these days. There are some very odd, and oddly spelled, names amongst little ones in schools these days, including kids who are not from Anglo Saxon cultures, whose names' pronunciations and spellings challenge parents, but are no big to the classmates. Kids pretty much absorb their classmates' names and move on. They do not have the prejudices our generations did.

And in many cases, unusual and melodic names actually attract other kids.

We are a much more multi cultural society...our Prez is named Barack... and our kids are way ahead of us. Plus this kid's gonna be pretty. I predict many birthday invitations for little Lion. :winky:
