I ifyou actually watched the whole interview she spent much more time on herself, her family. I thought the fashion show of her in different sexy outfits had very little to do with Whooping Cough; :wtf: was that all about? It fit in with nothing but "Look at me."

I may seem cynical but unless you watched for yourself, you really can't understand what I am saying.

Wow, that's harsh.

Sorry but it is the truth. Hollywood is a business. The timing is just too perfect for her coming out for BUP. If you watched the interview, you will know I am right.

Red, my dad was a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon who was a pioneer in the field. He helped invent the first heart/lung machine and was one of a handful of heart surgeons here on the west coast in the 50's. He was eventually Chief of Staff (head of the nospital)here in San Diego. I volunteered many summers in his hospital.

Harsh is reality. Whooping cough is on the rise, yes, but it is not as frequent as this interview implies. Again I say, the timing is too perfect and the time she spent talking about it was about 3 minutes in the entire interview.

I haven't seen the interview, but I do know whooping cough is on the rise - and the sad thing is, it doesn't need to be.

Pertussis (whooping cough) is becoming endemic in the US, due to waning immunization rates. In Washington State in 2008, there were over 500 cases of confirmed pertussis - 500 cases of a disease that didn't have to happen if people were properly vaccinated.

If J-Lo's using a public health issue to boost her career, I can't fault her for that - if even one person gets vaccinated or vaccinates their child against whooping cough, that's a good thing.

Personally, I'll forgive her just about anything if she makes our Alex a household name! :clapping:

WF, I don't know why you've assumed I haven't seen the interview. I have. Publicity and self-promotion aren't a crime - and as one of the most high-profile female stars in the world, J Lo knows all about the publicity circuit and has chosen to use that celebrity to support a worthy cause. I hardly think that deserves such criticism. I can't see the problem. If you don't want to watch, or you aren't interested in her, don't watch. Simple.

No. It's your opinion.

He sounds like a wonderful man - but I'm not sure what your point is in this context.

And I am sure that those involved with whooping cough campaigns are delighted to have celebrity support - the fact that we are discussing it here proves its worth in awareness-raising alone. I'm sure it is especially difficult for charities to gain celebrity support when they aren't for high profile or "glamorous" causes.

Yes, my opinion. I actually watched all the interviews. My point is that I am not against medical causes, I grew up with them. I also have lived a long time and these interviews were not about Whooping Cough. That was almost an afterthought. I resent celebrities using kids and illnesses to get out in the public eye. You don't have to agree with me; that's the nice thing about living in a democracy, isn't it??

Support? They would be better served having all pediatricians and doctors recommend everyone get re-vaccinated for Whooping Cough. That is all that has to be done, according to the doctor there. Put it on the daily news on TV. There everyone hears it.

No matter what your opinion of J Lo is, I can't believe that she would talk about whooping cough as purely a publicity stunt. She is a new mother and it will be something that is of concern to her and she wants to highlight it because she can. Nothing wrong with that. And just because BUP wasn't mentioned, that doesn't make it a PR stunt either.

I have to disagree with you on that one willing freshie I'm afraid.

Did I say she shouldn't do it? No. I said she used it as a vehicle. Please don't turn this into I am against curing Whooping Cough. I just see better ways to get the message out there then on talk shows. I see that it helped her to get out there. It is what promotion is all about. It is not bad, just works well for her.

WF, please read my posts before posting in bright red that you have actually watched the interviews. So have I.

If you believe that knowledgeable doctors and paediatricians giving information will be as effective as celebrity endorsement, then I think you're dreaming. Why would the Red Cross have involved Alex? Why would any cause or charity want to involve a celebrity? Because they know it works. It raises the profile of their particular cause and helps them to achieve their goals - in this case reducing childhood mortality. I am still totally failing to see how that can be anything other than a good thing.

I didn't get the sense of an ulterior motive either. She's a new mother, of course you don't have to be a mother to care about an illness that's on the rise and affecting infant mortality rates. I'm thrilled that she's doing it! I was unaware that it's a growing problem with a simple solution until I saw the interview. As for the outfits, of course she wants to also show that she's looking good and lost the baby lbs. while she's at it. People want to hear about the babies (and I guess Marc) so it seems natural that she'd allow those questions, and they're her babies, so she got a little chatty. She may have asked that there be no questions about her work so as to keep the focus on pertussis.

Sorry, JIMS - your lovely pic got lost in the "J Lo's motivation" debate. And it is a very lovely pic.

OK. Well, if she continues to get out there promoting it all during the next year, then fine. I know I seem like a B**TCH but I have just lost a dear friend and fellow teacher to cancer last night (at 49) so that may color my views a bit.

I am sorry WF... that would put anyone on edge... we have a friend struggling for life right now and my husband is a survivor...

Celebrities often adopt causes because it has some connection to someone they know too... In one of the interviews in which JLo appeared this week, she did note that the Latino community has been particularly plagued with the return of the Whooping Cough... which would make sense, as there are some within the very large Latino community in America who are poor and/or uninsured and/or illegal and thus don't seek medical help or get vaccinated. If the Latino community is particularly hard hit by the disease... JLo would be an appropriate spokesperson for it... and would likely feel a sense of responsibility to add her influence to getting vaccinated...
