Sorry for the tangent :offtopic: but I hope so, PNWgal, since that is exactly what I have just written in a new story. (That a very strong smell combined with a degree of confusion was enough to confuse a vampire.)

DSR, what a wonderful analysis of that one shot! Thank you for that--things like your analysis are what I love most about these episode discussions... :rose:

I'm sure with their extraordinary smelling ability they must get confused now and again. Animals can, why not vamps?
n all seriousness, I wonder if he finally realized at that last confession 36 years ago that the absolution he was seeking, he wasn't going to find at the hands of a servant of God. Given how much Mick hated what he is, a priest telling him his sins were forgiven wasn't going to be enough.
It would be difficult wouldn't it? Most priests are human so he wouldn't tell them what he is so he couldn't go into detail, hence, he couldn't give a true confession. Maybe that last one 36 years ago didn't go so well.

dsr, that was a fantastic observation. I do love that pic with all the symbolism against Mick's VO about vampirism and religion.

darkstarrising wrote:Looking at that first image, I just see so much more symbolism than I did in the one second it was on the screen....

First, Mick is standing in the back of the church, the outsider, looking to come in. There is a light behind him, silhouetting him. Yet shadows cast by his body appear to be both light and dark, as he himself is. In the front of the church, there is a crucifix (in the lore, something that repels vampires), yet here, it may be drawing him in. The other telling image in this shot is the candle in the red holder, otherwise known as the sanctuary light. When the sanctuary light is lit, it is supposed to indicate the presence of God in the church. Traditionally, the lamps have been red, to make it more distinctive than anything else, but how appropriate that it is a beacon for a vampire.

DSR, that is a beautiful analogy of that shot and that scene...truly.
Remember when he went into Jerry Drake's house looking for Shepherd and said "Unfortunately, all that fresh blood in the air, sometimes makes it hard to distinguish who's still here." so perhaps they can get...distracted.
Thanks, Christy! (See? That'll work fine for you, Phee... ;-) )

I hadn't noticed Mick's silhouette in that scene. Nice analysis, dsr :rose:
What I remember very clearly is Mick's voice when he says "I am the one who needs a confession" :thud:

Left to her own devices (no Mick and Audrey is asleep), Beth wanders into Mick's office. She stops to inhale (what I believe is probably one of the best smells on earth) the scent on Mick's shirt.

Image

She then progresses to his file cabinet and zeroes on the one labeled with the years of 1982-1985. She opens it and what to her wondering eyes should appear? A file with HER name on it!

Image

I'm thinking Mick needed a secretary - his filing skills aren't what they should be.

In the file are photos of her at various ages - from 4 to adult. She spreads them out on the floor and looks at them in disbelief.

Image

In the meantime, Mr. Can't File is arriving at Jerry Drake's house. The door is open.

Image

He enters quietly and his VO tells us that to humans blood just smells coppery but to vamps they can smell emotions like the fear of the person who shd it and the joy of the person who caused it. Jerry is dead on the floor.

Image

Mick immediately calls Beth to tell her Drake is dead. Beth is just cleaning up the pictures when she gets the call. He knows something is wrong right away but she says it's nothing and that Audrey is sleeping. Mick proceeds to tell her that Shepherd is probably after Audrey but when Beth questions if they are safe he says yes and he'll be there in about 10 minutes.

Image

With all that great smelling blood in the air Mick was not able to tell that Donovan was still there so it was a surprise when the new scary vamp comes flying out at him. Mick grabs the sword he played with earlier but it breaks when he hits Donovan with it.

Image

The two wrestle and roll out onto the patio. Mick goes flying over the glass railing and down the hill (Ouch! That does look like it hurts).

Image

He dropped his iPhone and Shepherd pick it up and scrolls through it to find Mick's address. (He learned to use an iPhone in prison?)

Image

Shepherd does that eery "Hello Sweetheart" thing.

Back at Mick's Audrey comes into Mick's office where Beth is sitting at his desk and she asks Beth what she's doing.

Image

"Nothing" is the reply. Audrey starts to ask about Mick - She says it's like they've known each other forever. She can't explain it. Beth mumbles that someone needs to.

Image

Audrey asks Beth if she knows where Mick is and if she's spoken with him.

Next we see Mick getting up from his fall. He searches his pants for his iPhone and realizes it must have fallen out up at the house. He says Beth's name. Guess he knows that Donovan now knows where he lives.

I love it when Mick says under his breath "Beth!" Gets me every time. She's always on his mind....except when Coraline is in the room. :giggle:

OK, GA... this was your BEST commentary EVER!!! :rolling:

Much to love in these scenes... her smelling his shirt (yeah, could auction that sucker off for lots of charity money); the fact that he knew IMMEDIATELY that something was wrong when she answered the phone; and I loved his V/O about the smell of blood and the pennies... I don't know why, but that's just a V/O that I particularly enjoyed... go figure. And I LOVED his "Oh Man!" when he picked himself up from the bottom of that hill... cute. Totally cute. And he wasn't all that concerned, rose up kinda casually actually, until he realized his phone was missing... THEN it got serious.

Dun dun DUNNNNNNNN!

Why, thank you, grace. Thank you very much. LOL

I was wondering.....Do you think Mick kinda knew Beth was going to snoop through his house and would most likely find her file? Was he actually hoping she would? Otherwise wouldn't he have removed her file? Locked his office door?

Cool question... he HAD to figure she wasn't gonna stay in that one little room all day. I mean, he's a guy but he's not a moron. He told her not to go upstairs or in the office or thru the gray door BUT there was no food in the kitchen and no apparent magazines or DVD's with which to distract her, plus isn't the bathroom upstairs???

It's not just that Beth's a reporter and he called her pushy in the first ep... frankly, given all those circumstances, plus you're in a VAMPIRE"S house unsupervised, wouldn't YOU go all over that house? Including thru the gray door?

Oh, I definitely think that he wanted her to find out. It falls in line with the entire 'push-pull' mentality he had with her---thinking it would be best to stay out of her life, unable to do so, etc. He knows how curious she is, knows she is putting the pieces together. I think for him, her finding out this way is actually much easier than him having to go to her about it. Takes some of the burden and angst off of him.

Not to mention, Mick is rarely careless about anything. Except of course anyone can break into the FoS, but, that's another discussion entirely!

PS~~beautiful photos and commentary as always GA

Oh, yeah. This was another of Mick's little "tell Beth not to do something, knowing she'll do it" moments. He had to know she would snoop, but he told himself that he was doing all he could (hah!) to dissuade her...and so of course, it's not his doing that she found out. And since she found out when he wasn't there, he doesn't have to see the look on her face. Aaaaand, since he doesn't deserve to be loved anyway, he might as well just get it over with, right? And go back to being alone, like he deserves to be. :mdrama:

For such a brave, gallant person, Mick is really a wimp about some things.
