Josefismysire wrote: Alle..very well said. I think you hit the nail right on the head. Maybe all of Alex's "hero worship" of Dr. Gonzo has gotten in the way..he is trying so hard to BE Dr. Gonzo..to make him proud..that he hasn't created Dr. Andy. It must be difficult to pattern your fictional character after a real-life person and then do it justice..does that make sense?
JIMS - I've been thinking the exact same thing for a couple of days now. I didn't quite know how to put it into words, but I think you've summed it up perfectly. If he's trying to play someone he idolizes, someone who has grown to be a friend, then he has to be influenced by that relationship at least on an unconscious level.

allegrita wrote:I've been thinking about Alex's portrayal of Andy Y., and why it didn't seem to "work" completely. Many people have mentioned that he doesn't seem to be "inhabiting" the role the way he inhabits most of his other roles. Lunalux and I were talking this evening and we decided that it's because he's trying to capture what Andy does, and not who Andy is. I think he's been spending so much time trying to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, learning the lingo and wearing the mask and trying to fill Dr. Gonzo's huge shoes, he's been neglecting what kind of person Andy is. But the person is who we are going to be interested in, and compelled by. Andy is not the sum of his talents, he's a gestalt. Alex needs to get in touch with what makes Andy tick, and stop being intimidated by trying to be the best fake doctor on TV. Mind you, he wasn't helped by the script in episode 1. I felt like he needed a hook to hang Andy on, and they didn't provide it for him. So... I'm hoping that they'll give him that hook to hang his character on. And give hooks to the other characters, too.

Thank you, Alle - you've put your finger on something I've been trying to pin down since Sunday. It's like Alex is wearing a suit that's just a little too big for him and he's only had a chance to get the jacket tailored.

JIMS, good point...and it made perfect sense. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but Alex needs to take that skeleton of reality he was provided and flesh it out to make Dr. Andy HIS character. We all know he's got the talent to pull it off - he just needs to be given the opportunity.

Agreeing with my genius buddies that he's a bit overly smitten with the real Gonzo, and that he hasn't quite settled into the character yet, but could do if given time.

HOWEVER, Alex's good but not-yet-perfect portrayal of Andy does not explain away the writing issues and the apparent lack of medical accuracy, not to mention oversized babies, that disturbed many viewers on the first round...

Better writing and smaller babies are needed, stat. As to the acting, Alex will get the job done.

Annnnnnnd, I will see him thru it all. Even if they don't fix the writing and they never give Andy the depth he deserves, I'm watching our guy. I cannot stay away from any screen that he is on. I even halt my wine glass, mid sip, when I happen to catch a 3R promo... THAT is dedication in a fangirl, ladies....

i already posted my though on the TR board but i pretty much feel like many of you, the show just didn't do it it for me, the scripts and dialogues were really bland and cliché and that doesn't help the actors to give good performances. And yeah no back story except for Miranda in the 1st episode was a mistake.

I hope it'll get better fast.

Thanks, Alle. And you're right he can only work with what he's given.

To coin a phrase, being a cardio thoracic surgeon isn't all you are Andy.

I would love to see Alex's trademark irreverence prominently displayed,
PG rated of course. I know he thinks these guys are gods, but
Get some single malts in them and he might see another side of gonzo.

Andy is a smart ass, so we've been told, Alex is a smart ass. I say
Go for it.

In my ever so humble opinion, I see less of Andy's 'god-like' characteristics being displayed in his personal life. Most doctors, and surgeons of that caliber, are notorious for giving everything they have in their fields of expertise, to the detriment of their personal lives. They are showing Andy as a 'demi-god' (phrase courtesy of PGal) in his professional life. I bet his personal life is a mess---and that is where the juxtapositioning between private and work worlds will collide. That is what will make for fascinating tv.

It also makes for a hell of a more interesting character: the good guy doctor, the not so good guy in his personal life, perhaps? That intrigues me to no end.

Plus, we will get to see him out of his workday clothes.
...always going the shallow route, I know...

And I love taking the shallow route with you, dear Fleur, because even in your shallowness you have great depth. I think you're right--Andy's got to have some flaws. After all--we know he's separated from his wife. Living in a hotel attached to the hospital. In a clip, we saw him telling a guy that he was a real screw-up and had to turn his life around. He's from a rough part of town and his former friends give him loads of crap for having "sold out." Yeah, there's potential there. I'm willing to give him a chance to show me Andy's flaws, and if he does it playing rugby and hanging out in casual clothes in his (not so) copious spare time, well... I like to swim in the shallow end of the pool from time to time, as long as I know there's a deep end to explore as well. :hearts:

He signed up at YT just for that video.

I sense a guitar jamming session with Alex happening. Interesting to hear TR's premiere was a success in the eyes of the cast and crew! I'm glad they are upbeat about it. As I recall, people of different ethnic backgrounds have trouble finding genetic matches for bone marrow transplants. I assume it might be the same for organs.

Well, rats. :Mickangel: He appears to have now set that video to "private". I viewed it once, but now when you click the link you get a "This video is private" message. :sigh:

Although, I am not a strong swimmer, so, we will have to stick to the shallow end!
