I'm a bit sad that she has no job and has time to do this, and I'm a bit anxious and hope she will get out of there okay. Seems to me there would be safer places to backpack at, and I hope she doesn't go alone. If I were her, I wouldn't tell a pesky reporter who was going with me, but I would never dare to go there alone.

maybe you're right and she is not going alone. Maybe she just didn't want to share with the reporter who she was going with. It makes more sense than she going alone.
