Thanks so much for the comments! I did want to have Ned be a believable character for the time and place--and hope I've made him so. We'll see how he fares, and how he figures in this tale, as we go along.

Oh, what a great chapter! I was sucked into Ned's story, and his sadness had me sniffling. Yet he is a very resilient person, and he's managed to bounce back. Yeah... he's lucky that he ran into Madame Rose when he did. But not everyone is ready to be saved at the time their savior shows up... and Ned was ready.
I'm looking forward to learning more about Ned's role in the story to come.

Ned's story was both heartbreaking and expected.
People do not end up that that profession without having had a brush with vampire life in one way or another.
I hope that Ned's arrangement with Josef works out.
