Mmmmm. That was just all Mick.
A piece like this really reminds us all of why we miss Mick so much. Tortured, beautiful Mick.

Heartbreakingly beautiful, Red.
Of course, I acknowledge the validity of this possibility [although I much prefer the universe of Homecoming/Stealing Home and Lauds (not sure if Lauds is the chapter that fits into this line, sorry)].
Mick worships his lost humanity (for lack of a better word), and although I know I hoped that he would be able to see the reality of a future with his Beth, there was always the possibility that he would refuse to. I wondered briefly if he draws some of his strength from this inner struggle that allows him to be who he is in spite of the vampire drives he strives to control.
Lovely, lovely piece.

that's a surprise. Red fic.

Thanks,
coco. All Mick - my favourite kind of story (shocker).
jen, this actually fits in with the other stories you mentioned - this is set after B.C. so Mick is still denying the possibility that he can be with Beth; Homecoming et al come much later. I'm intrigued by the thought that Mick
needs a little inner torment to allow him to function. Very interesting...

My pleasure, sweetie. No matter how much torture I inflict on Mick, my ultimate belief is that he will find peace and happiness (even if I have all kinds of differing thoughts on what that might look like).

Moonlighter, thank you so much for bringing this one back up. It's got such mood, and such an air of regret and sadness, tempered by just a shred of hope. Thank goodness for hope.
Hinterland, indeed. He's hunkered down, getting a little respite before he has to go face the people he thinks he has failed. And to think that he's beating himself up for being hungry at the blood... it's like a human feeling guilty for salivating at the smell of chocolate!

Oh I LOVE that - such a perfect description. It's in his nature... just like the scorpion crossing the river.
