It is not always the numbers per se. A lot of it is measuring cost VS. numbers. If a series is doing well BUT costs a fortune to make it, with the economy the way it is,it can still be axed. Case in point, Cold Case (I like this show) is still doing well but is on the bubble because it is expensive to make.
Part of ML's problem (and it had many) was they struggled under the budget they were given. But I don't think that would have changed anything; too much drama took place with that show internally, and with the strike, it just never had a chance.
I think one of the appealing aspects of AI to the network( besides HUGE numbers) it is probably relatively cheap to do. I don't know that for sure; just speculation.
Sorry, Lisa! I just am extremely bored by AI.
ETA: Amy, we sound alike!

No apologies needed, hon!! Like I said, we watch and laugh and enjoy that together as a family--not a of shows that we can do that with.
And I agree about the cost/benefit ratio---even though ML didn't have the kind of budget they needed, I think it cost a decent amount to produce, couple that with the inner turmoil, and, well, we don't need to rehash all of that.

What's so sad is it still kind of hurts. When I looked at those pics of Sophia and Alex and saw AGAIN how strong their chemistry was, it breaks my heart.

Weighing in on the cost cutting measures of the nets; I wouldn't be surprised to see some extraneous cast members bite the dust. In CM for instance, there seem to be superfluous cast and I'm sure they could drop a couple without changing the dynamic of the show dramatically. The problem is though with an established show, who do you ditch? You risk alienating the fanbase that way. I wouldn't be surprised to see new shows that have a reduced number of cast members; an ensemble still, but smaller.
Also
Lucia, you asked in an earlier post who Alex's friends could be on CM. I know Simon Mirren would have been one. Perhaps Alex met other people through him last year and was catching up with them when he filmed.
I'm really excited to see his episode. I quite like CM and have watched it on and off since it started. My eldest daughter used to be a fanatical watcher of the show, which kind of puzzles me. I'm not sure how people get so involved when there's so little character growth over the seasons and when the characters are so ordinary (which they are except for Reid and Garcia, and Garcia's usually only in a few scenes anyway).
The only problem I have with the show is the exposition between the profilers which is there for the audience's benefit (to explain motive etc.,) but passes as conversation between the characters. It comes off really clunky and obvious. They stand there and politely listen to each other when in real life they'd go "I know that, what d'ya think I'm an idiot?! I learnt that at the academy in my first week!."

But short of actually talking to the audience directly, I don't know how they could do it differently.

You know what, Moonmad, that is an apt description of how they related to one another on CM. Perhaps that was what my problem was when I kept referring to the stilted dialogue. It makes sense the way you have laid it out.
i tend to like more character driven things (my guilty pleasure of A.I. notwithstanding. Though it could be argued that there are a varied amount of characters on that show). I tend to go for more dialogue, and quirkiness. And it just seemed that although the caliber of actors on CM is good, the back and forth between them left me flat. Next time I view the show, I will definitely keep in mind what you have stated. It might make a difference for me knowing that!

Ya know,
Fleur... you really only have to like it well enough and long enough to get to April 29, when you are sure to LOVE it (unless they kill him in some really cruel way and then I'll be so bummed... )...
... after that you can forget about it all over again... so you don't really have to get its every nuance, Sweetie...
... tho I DO admire your ardent intellectualism in pursuit of Alex enlightenment...

I do tend to put way too much though into things, don't I??? I guess the bottom line for me was why is CM so popular? And am I missing something?
And one thing I absolutely do not worry about is how the April 29th ep will fare. No worries at all about that. And if he does get 'offed'--he will be the most delicious looking corpse we will have ever seen!

I want him to live!!! Tho he does do a magnificent death scene... as in MB... tho he also did that horrendous death scene in The ManThing...
OK, if he DOES die... hoping for an MB death scene rather than a ManThing one... I'm guessing he learned from that one... still, hoping he lives...
Am I still on topic here at all?

Completely on topic, as we are discussing whether or not his CM character gets killed.

And Man-Thing. Shows how much we love our Alex that we suffered through that.

I recorded it and watched it over 3 nights--because it took me that long to convince myself to get through it. And I watched it till the bitter end. I am neurotic that way--also always finish a book no matter how much I dislike it.
Think I need some therapy. TIme to hop over to the Alex pic thread.....

That is excellent therapy... totally approve of your choice...
...and to get back on-topic, because
Fleur and I are utterly disciplined about remaining on topic...
I look forward to seeing many screen caps of our beloved serial killer on the Alex thread in another couple of weeks...

I know. Don't you just hate it when people go off-topic? How annoying is that? Short attention spans, I guess. Or they get distracted easily.
Oh look, a squirrel.....

Speaking of CM and screencaps....and maybe squirrels

....has anyone found a
legal download site for Criminal Minds episodes? I think it's STILL not offered on either iTunes or Amazon which is where I susually go for vids I want to keep. This episode will need to be preserved, after all.
