Thanks for the comments!

I think it's interesting that so many people have commented on the "fight like a girl" remark, and I thought it might be worth mentioniing that I included that--even though Mick is generally not one to go for the snappy banter during fights--because I specifically wanted to evoke the fight scene with Coraline, and the images of Mick, face scratched, rolling on the floor with another vamp. I'm guessing from the response that it may have worked.

It worked very well, in two ways: one, it absolutely evoked the fight with Coraline when Mick saves Beth as a child. Second, I imagine that it threw the bad guy off his game for a second, which gave Mick an edge so that he could flip him over and stake him. Win-win.

I agree with alle. As soon as you read that line you are taken back to that very scene. The "fight like a girl" is so visual and adds so much to the story.

What more can I add?
Your story is seamless, never falters, perfect noir tone from beginning to the end. Someone mentioned Spillane, I was thinking Philip Marlowe and I guess I need to watch my dvds, because I 'heard' some of those voiceovers in Bogie's accent not Mick's. :blushing:
AMAZING indeed! I hope there are more Case Files to be revealed.
:reading: Thank you.

More case files, hmmm. I don't currently have any plans for that, but I assure you, if the idea strikes, I'm certainly not against it.

Thanks so much, I was certainly striving for a noir feel, and glad to hear we hit the mark.

I'll say again how valuable coco's input on this project was.

Lucky and Coco, I loved this story. Mick and the the story behind one of those looks.

I enjoyed the whole idea of it, out to protect his brother Josef and as he did he is caught up in a case which through his methods takes a turn for the worse. It really does go to show what happens when Mick is not really on his game or seemingly so.

Feeling guilty and then through necessity for getting to Josef he turns Marcil and then almost leaves him to it, just giving him little tit bits of support to get him along.

I felt so sorry for Marcil if Josef hadn't been taken then he would never have been turned by Mick. It would also be the reason to why Mick would never turn anyone again as he lost him, but as least it wasn't vicious Marcil did what he had to do and Mick and he accepted it, or so it seems, if not just with a little reluctance.

It was a fantastic insight to what was literally seconds on screen, what was behind that look? This is a strong possibility...superbly done and a great collaboration

Sharon, thanks so much. I always felt that given Mick's feelings on the subject, he'd never turn anyone if he felt there were any way around it. And I also thought that he would have had to have been in a strange place in his head at the time when the Beth kidnapping came up, so it seemed like those two things might have come together in that last case before Baby Beth.

Marcin had a rough life, and certainly didn't deserve to go so young, but I know Mick would have admired his fortitude and character in choosing not to go on as a vampire. I think maybe Mick might have eventually made the same choice, if the need to guard over Beth had not given him a reason to go on living.

Nicely done!!!

Fabulous collaboration. Not only are you wonderful storytellers, but you were so successful in capturing the ambiance of the old stype 40's and 50's PI drama.

Congratulations on a job very, very well done. I'd love to read more of the same.

jen, thanks! I see you were working your way through the reader/writer challenge fics this evening, and that's great! This challenge really was a lovely experience for a lot of people, and produced some superior stories.

I'm so pleased that you like this one. I would like to do some further writing in the Mick/pre-Beth noir vein. And I expect it'll happen sooner or later!

Maybe coco will give me another great start, along with her perfectly timed questions that did so much to shape this story!

Great story!

My favourite line is: "I regret a lot of things in my life. Dragging that cowering human, the one who’d watched them torture my friend, over to be a meal for Josef, isn’t one of them."

Just one question: What did Marcin want from Josef in the first place?

I, too, would like to read more case files...

Thanks for the fun I've had reading this! Kade

Thinking back to the file cabinets in Mick's office, makes it possible to imagine all the wonderful episodes of MoonLight that didn't have the opportunity to be brought to life. Walking back through the years touching on key moments in Mick's history would have been as they say in the commercials "priceless".

thank you both for doing the wonderful job that you did!

Oh delightful! Red's latest story had me thinking of Mick and turning people, and so she pimped a re-read of this one...

And I am so so glad! I hadn't thought about this story in a while, and that's my loss! This is just as intense and wonderful as it was the first time.

Brava, ladies! And psssst! You oughta do another one...

Just back for a reread and this is so fabulous. Dark, gritty, yet filled with loyalty and heroism.

This provides such wonderful detail and richness to the backstory.

Those largely silent years when Mick was a working PI cry out to be accounted for and this is amazing.
