FWIW, that odd hanging thing looks like part of the jacket to me - there's a button at the top on the inside and it looks to be made of fabric.

A GF would not necessarily help a man dress better because, as I recall, the last GF wasn't much of a dresser either. Those awful sailor pants come to mind. I actually think he is trying NOT to be sexy and more frumpy, quirky, eccentric ....well, it didn't work. The sexy comes through.
