OK, duh. I just noticed there was a new one in here...

Touch... yeah... definitely a wonderful, sensory-laden description of an electrical reaction to touch. And I love how you, ever so precisely but concisely, note his difficult 55 years without her touch... you can write, my friend. Sigh.

We should play a game... I can describe that scene in 20 words... I can describe that scene in 15 words... I can describe that scene in... you would always win, Red.

sbj, thank you so much. Don't we all strive to provoke that kind of reaction? I'm delighted and flattered that, from time to time, it works. These characters have so much inherent power - we all feel it - and finding ways of putting that down in words is always the challenge. As for the grieving, hell yeah I know precisely what you mean.

Grace, I wasn't hiding, honest. I think you've probably summed up why I love writing drabbles so much - because of the challenge. It's not just a random 100 words. It's 100 words that say what could be said in 1000, trying to distil, to find the bits that really matter.

#8 - Sight
Beth/Mick

Beth watched him slide by the mirror, his usual cursory glance. To his eyes, the silvered glass showed a fairground distortion, ancient darkness licking at his edges, masked by youth but ever-present.

Rising, moving to him, she took his face in her hands, her own inspection bringing different answers. She saw love, care, age, wisdom, the lingering sadness she longed to banish, the fears he couldn’t hide. On some days, she even saw hope.

She saw the man.
She saw the vampire.

At his questioning frown, she gripped tighter, urging him to believe.

“I see you, Mick St. John.”

Oh man! This one rings chillingly true (the first part) and then heart-warmingly true (the second part). Beth always did see the man and she also saw the vampire... she just didn't calculate that as a negative.

This reminds me of that scene in FtP when she takes his face after he rescues her from the surgeon...

Wow!! This is so beautifully written. The first paragraph in particular is so true, so Mick. And from Beth's side trying to make him see what she sees in him!! Very powerful drabble, Red!!!! I am still in awe of your writing!!!!

#9 - Hearing
Mick/Beth

The solitary cello strained, mournful yet filled with hope, its timeless beauty, an embodiment of grace. No-one who heard it could doubt the existence of mercy.

It swelled within him. A wash of childhood memory, the magic of shared, sleepless nights, mother and son, her careworn fingers stroking through his hair, holding him close as he whispered his hopes and dreams.

As then so it was now and Mick no longer fought the urge to open, to share his secrets. He drew Beth closer, compelled by a force beyond reason, “There are some things I’d like to tell you.”

red, these are awesome. They are so short but so full of emotion.
I especially loved Sight, because of the mirror image and the way Beth mirrored Mick.

And in Hearing he finally opens up and lets her hear him. Wonderful!
