THR Interviews CBS’s Nina Tassler

CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler opens up to The Hollywood Reporter on various topics, including the appeal of crime shows and procedurals. Tassler also voices CBS’s hopes for finding the right medical show. “We do want to find the right alchemy that will give way to a big, successful, serialized show for us. We would love a big monster medical hit and hopefully we have it in the pile that we’re gonna pick up this year.”

So, does that mean that CBS is going to pick up all three medical dramas? Wow, talk about dog eat dog world. If CBS does that, its going to be left to the viewers to decide which one they like best (ratings), with the others likely biting the bullet and going bye-bye. Yikes! Also, its going to be extremely important the night and time they air the shows. And I would think you would be able to tell almost immediately which one CBS is favoring.

Where the hell are my Tums?!

Suz, she could just have meant in the pile of all types of shows they're going to pick up.

Don't blame you a bit, grace. I don't care for medical shows, either..and the thought of Alex watching surgeries..well, ick. That's above and beyond the call of duty, imo..but, he seems to like gore-laden stuff..so, this is probably right up his alley...

I was 16 years old when I watched my dad perform triple bypass open heart surgery. I stood with him at the table. My BF at the time was with me, also. He ran out at the beginning , but returned for the whole procedure. They opened up the patient's leg, removed three veins, and opened up the chest, stopped the heart, and sewed the veins over the stoppage places. This was back in 1971 so there were no computers; it was all done by hand. Really, when they first open, it is a little icky, but they cauterize the blood vessels so it stops being bloody. Also, they literally sawed the breastbone open (now THAT was gross) and had huge clamps that pulled both sides of the bone apart and held them that way. That was the worst part. The saw made a grinding sound (hence the departure of my BF.)LOL

But everything is neat and clean; they played music over the speakers and told dirty jokes. People came in and out because the only sterile area is right around the operating area.

Oh, yeah. One more gross thing happened. About half way through, the patient opened his eyes. His chest was wide open! I told the anesthesiologist and he just smiled and said no problem. He turned the knob on the tube and the patient closed his eyes again. They said it happens all the time because you have to be careful how much meds you give and that they never remember anything.

I interpreted it as Ms. T saying they have lots of shows they are looking to pick up, some of them medical dramas, and they hope that one of the shows they pick up will be a medical show that then goes on to be a huge hit. I don't think she's ruled anything in or out here.

I think she meant they will pick up one medical show from the pile of all the new pilots for next season.
Why wouldn't this woman just come out and say they will pick up TR, for Bob's sake?

Ms. T. loves Alex, wants a medical drama to air in the fall, etc.

It's gonna get picked up.

I am curious as to when a lot of these shows will air--I am hoping for a time slot opposite Leno--I have a feeling that the shows that run opposite him will do well, numbers-wise. Speaking for myself, and a lot of people in my age demo., we are not Leno fans and will be looking for something else to watch in the 9pm (cst) hour.

Exactly Red, as there aren't a "pile" of medical shows alone, so I think that she's referring to all new offerings. What I choose to take from this is that CBS really wants a hit medical show.

Last year we heard two days before the upfronts. (What a dreadful day that was)
But I am so optimistic this year!
So, we should expect something by Monday 5/18....

What I find interesting is that CBS is 14 days away from its Upfronts and it has renewed only 4 shows--The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Survivor and the Amazing Race. You just know they're doing some hardball negotiations with all their current shows, especially those produced by studios other than CBS Paramount.
