But I don't have to let go of Mick. Mick exists, apart from Alex, on the dvds, in the fanfic, in the glorious screencaps, on the boards like this as long as these boards exist. I see Mick as almost a separate person. I didn't lose him or let him go when I saw The Shield. I saw a new person: Kevin Hiatt.
I've written about this before somewhere but when I see Alex, in character, I see the character. It's not the same thing as seeing Robert Redford. Any role I've seen him in it's 'Robert Redford playing whoever'. He never overcomes the Robert Redfordness for me. When I see Alex, in a part that's big enough to develop a sense of character, I see that character. I think that's his talent and gift as an actor.
I don't know if this will hold if the CM character is truly loathsome. The Mentalist character is so creepy to me that I can't watch Simon Baker any more at all. Gives me pause when I think of Alex's new project which I might not like! I have to go on faith and trust Alex's talent to disappear into a role so I won't lose him. But I think Mick is safe!

Wow, you think Patrick Jane is 'creepy'?! I've never heard anyone say anything but 'adorable' or suchlike.

...on another subject - Alex said KITTIES! Oh God that's so cuuuuute!!!! :hearts:

He's such an expressive, versatile actor and a treat to watch in whatever he does! Mick is special to us all; I just hope everyone has an open mind going in and realizes that this is obviously not going to be Mick redux.

But a lot of folks who will see this will have never seen Moonlight... so he'll be new to many of them... and I hope his killer isn't so onerous that he gets pigeonholed as THAT... but we'll see.

But you're right mwj... it's the Moonlight fans who will have to let go of Mick... temporarily at least... and give him his moment.
With all due respect  , why is this even an issue? Just my feelings here, but this gets my back up. There are always wacko fans who live in a fantasy world of their own, but I don't see that happening with the majority of diehard ML fans.

I for one, hope that he becomes better known. I don't see his CM appearance as particularly special. For all I know, CBS threw him a bone with it. As much as I root for him, I'm realistic about his chances.

Alex comes across as a sweetheart, and I can't help but feel gratitude and be supportive of someone who could channel a character like Mick. I'm pleased to see his mood is "creative". It's fun to keep tabs on him, but I'm pretty neutral about everything else. I also don't think he needs protection.

I'm not letting go of Mick, why should I? I don't think most people are deluded enough to expect him to be Mick in future roles. How about giving ML fans a break and letting go of our chequered past? :grouphug:

lafluffy, I really think everyone's saying the same thing here - i.e. hoping that most people aren't so deluded that they will expect Mick mark two.

There's loads of Mick love here - and plenty of Alex love too. Absolutely no reason why anyone should have to give up one for the other IMO.

lafluffy,

I think the point that mwj and wpgrace were making was for those who plan on watching, please don't tune in hoping to see Mick Part 2, that's all. Comparing the two roles will be impossible. It's like apples and oranges. I don't think they were saying that the ML fans should let go of Mick, just that while watching that eppy of Criminal Minds, don't expect Alex to be channeling Mick St. John.

But that's my point, redwinter. I am not "hoping" that people aren't deluded. I think most are not. I guess I just think highly of most ML fans, knowing full well there is a fringe element.

I hope for Alex's sake that the role will be very different, so that he can show his range. Yeah, for my Mick-loving side, I could wish for the hair and the cool and the voice... (pausing a moment for worshipful fantasizing) :hearts: ...but I think those things will have to wait. Right now Alex should be allowed to show off a different look and feel.

I'll never let go of Mick or Moonlight. But Alex has to. And I agree, lafluffy-- most Moonlight fans are genuinely good, smart people. We just got associated with a few loons who made us look bad. :(

 Exactly! So well put!

As an aside, I don't think we'll see the likes of that hair again. Sigh. I think I need a moment of silence. And something like Taps. Or is that something "on tap" :redwine:

I'm waiting for his mood icon to say, "I'm growing it out again". ;)

*nods head* Yes, thanks, SS, that is all I meant.

Cause I'm not giving up Mick in the sense of letting go of him either... just letting Alex be a new guy without measuring that guy against Mick. Cause you CAN"T best Mick.

And Lord, dear Lafluffy, don't get upset by anything I say. I wax most poetic when I speak of hands and henleys... I'm shallow, as you may recall. And I NEVER utter fighting words... I'm a lover, not a fighter... :snicker:

Please don't worry! Everything's copacetic. :ghug: I understand the fears about Mick v Alex, but I think they're unfounded. The ML wackos no longer rule. Like ML, ML fans have risen from the ashes, cleansed of that taint. I'm tired of ML fans getting a bum rap.

This is my favourite site, because it's all ML and all ML love. It's pure. We represent the very best in ML fandom. :soap:

PS. I love that line "You can't BEST Mick". I so agree with that. I think it was kismet for Alex.

I think I've said everything I've wanted to. 8-)

My attitude has always been it's all about Alex's talent. I loved Mick St. John, and because of that portrayal, I was drawn to watch Alex in a variety of other acting roles. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this role on CM, as well as whatever subsequent roles he takes on, will only be filled with the best this man has to offer. He is a consummate professional, who was brought to our attention by playing the world's most gorgeous vampire.

There are always going to be Fanatics--who are extreme--that will only see an actor in one role. You see that with just about every actor/actress out there. I think Alex is smart enough to realize that 99% of his fans are normal, fairly well-adjusted people who wish him nothing but the best. And they all reside happily on this board!
