Mary Bryant--The Beginning

Post by Fleur de Lisa »

SInce so many of my online pals have suggested that I watch Mary Bryant, I thought that it was only appropriate to start a discussion thread regarding it. Pictures of MB are welcome and strongly encouraged!

I began watching it this afternoon, and it is amazing. I have only viewed the first half, but it completely entranced me. You know how you get all hazy and feel kind of out of it after you have immersed yourself in a captivating book? That has been my experience with the first part of this movie. The acting is great, the drama and romance intense, and let's talk a bit about how good Alex is in this, shall we? Not to mention that the man has never looked better.

If you are going to post something that "gives away" anything important in the second half of the movie, please place it in a spoiler tag. Since it is such a long film, it would be nice to discuss the portions separately, however, I realize that I am being transparently selfish in requesting that!

So, if anyone would like to start us off with a beautiful pic of this phenomenal movie, I would be ever so grateful!

Well, let's start with Will and Mary's first meeting on board ship. I think it's safe to say Will is instantly smitten:

So true Red... Mary less so...

...tho weren't WE already smitten when he climbed on board and looked up the "Leftenant's" wife's skirt?????

And to hear that devil may care attitude and accent?

Totally new ALex for me... and I loved it!

Shame he had to wear rags most of the movie, but eh...

Oh but he wore them well.

And the accent, all in all, was pretty good. It wandered around a bit but he did at least manage to keep it somewhere in England most of the time.

Red, was there a particular accent he was supposed to be hitting? She was supposed to be from Cornwall, right? But was his character from a specific place?

That first comment from him, I knew I was going to love his character.

And did he not look absolutely gorgeous? I think my jaw was open most of the time. His smile---goodness gracious, those expressive eyes.

My favorite expression of his was the scene in the bottom of the boat:
Spoiler:
when Mary was giving birth
His face conveyed so many emotions--you could watch them just flitting across his lovely face.

I am in love with Will Bryant.

I don't think they ever gave his character a specific location - but for most of the time his accent was West Country. But then we did get bits of East Anglia, a hint of Cockney and even some Yorkshire from time to time!!!

I will alert Mick... :snicker:

I liked him better in this first half...and won't spoil it for you Lisa... but he was so cocky at the beginning of this movie...

By the end of the half, as you saw, he has had the wind knocked out of him a few times over... tired and powerless and trying to be the man for the wife and kids, but reminded by Admiral Whatever from Pirates that he is a prisoner... and then losing the wife and kids, sorta, to the Admiral.... he is a more tired guy, a changed guy, by the end of part one...

Alex showed that transition.

Oh red.
Thank you for that.

It gave me funny feelings in my tummy.
I adored that scene.
And I am so glad that you all convinced me to get that movie. I cannot wait to finish watching it.

Will there be more Will/Mary love scenes? I am such a bad girl, I wanted more.
And I have to say Cap'n Crunch, or Leftnut or whatever--he's really good in this, too. And not a bad looking bloke, either.

Red, if you are taking pic requests... I LOVE the scene where they are about to make love after their marriage (duh, everyone does) but the look on his face as he is about to shed his coat... if anyone, not just Red, has that screen cap... so cool!

I am enjoying it a great deal. Just join in the convo and don't be shy, kelly
Give us your thoughts, since you have already enjoyed it.

And that is the magic of Alex, and why I love him so, he can inhabit the character so well, that you can't help but falling for WIll or Mick, or any of his characters.

And I loved his confidence and cockiness, grace--even in the most horrid conditions, he had moxie!
