francis, thanks for the comment! I'm glad you're enjoying this one...it's tons of fun to write. And while I'm cranking out a couple of random one-shots, rest assured this story will be continued, soon.

Love the update Lucky!

Boy, you sure turned Iris from a funny, slightly annoying character...to a person I care about. So sad that she died...Poor Josef. He needs a hug methinks. :comfort:

Can't wait for the baddies to get what's comin to them!!

Too good not to comment, but Josef, the pragmatic vamp that he is, did the right thing. Revenge will be forthcoming. But first, the colonel. I, too, am picturing Geo. Custer. I wonder if he hadn't been though his last stand yet.

Wonderful, nosy, resourceful Sally (I hope her husband isn't as stolid as I fear...) - methinks she's in for a little excitement. And I think she knows it too.

I love reading Westerns. It seems to help me imagine myself in a beautiful, intriguing part of our nation. Lucky, you have married two things I love in a marvelous way: ML and the West. This is first of any of your work I have read. I am glad this was selected at the coffee house or I may not have read it. Simply marvelous. I am just waiting for OUR Josef to emerge and kick the living s**t out of the stage coach robbers/murderers. I can't wait to see/read the expression on their faces!!! :swords:

I was so intrigued by the description of Josef's Turning that went wrong - so the situation with Sarah wasn't the first time a Turning became a tragedy for him. Interesting idea, and it really makes sense.

The exchanges between Sally and Josef are really lovely here. I adored how Sally told him he was "only human."

On re-reading, the thing that struck me most about this chapter was the intensity of the confinement. Everything takes place within the tiny space within the carriage - we hear and feel the surroundings, but neither we, nor Josef or Sally, know what is to come next. And yet within those confines, our characters are so delightfully true: Sally does her best to give Josef some privacy, she really does - with just a moment's curiosity to get the better of her. While Josef, sunk is sorrow, still manages to make some practical decisions about the best course of action.

Delightful - and with a wonderful sense of foreboding.
