Heart and 'Minds': 'Moonlight' Star O'Loughlin Returns to Prime Time As Serial Killer
April 29, 2009

By Mark A. Perigard, Boston Herald
Apr. 29--Alex O'Loughlin staked a claim to fame as the heroic vampire Mick St. John in the supernatural drama "Moonlight," a casualty of last year's writers strike.

Now he returns to prime time guesting on CBS' "Criminal Minds" (tonight at 9 on WBZ, Ch. 4) as a spooky serial killer who hopes police can halt his rampage.

In "The Big Wheel," an episode written for the actor, O'Loughlin plays Vincent, a man suffering from severe OCD. Something is triggering murderous urges within him, and he leaves clues for authorities to stop him. It's an unusual hour with a mystery that ends with unexpected poignancy.

"I'm playing a villain, kind of," O'Loughlin told the Herald last week in a telephone interview. "He's a very flawed human being, but there is redemption as far as I'm concerned.

"As I'm moving into this leading-man phase of my career, you don't even get to read roles like this very much and you don't get offered guest-star parts like this. I'm an actor -- I didn't go to leading-man school, I went to acting school," he said, then laughed.

The Australian has been in demand since "Moonlight" was canned last year, a decision CBS all but officially concedes was a mistake.

He is currently filming a pilot for another CBS series, "Three Rivers, in which he plays a cardiothoracic surgeon. He appears on the big screen in September in the sci-fi thriller "Whiteout," a film he completed before "Moonlight." He soon starts filming the romantic comedy "The Back-Up Plan" opposite Jennifer Lopez.

But he's beloved to fans for his role as the undead detective with the heart of a romantic. And O'Loughlin returns the love.

A year away from the series, he said, "I look back at it with a broken heart for the most part. I put every part of me into that show. I was fighting for it from every angle and I was there from the very beginning."

Given the recent success of the big-screen "Twilight" and HBO's "True Blood," is there any chance "Moonlight" could rise for a big-screen reunion?

Alex O'Loughlin guest stars on Criminal Minds tonight (Story continues below)

"(Executive producer) Joel Silver called me right before Christmas. 'Alex, we're making the movie. You in?' 'Well, sure.' He hung up, and I haven't heard from him since. I don't know what the answer to that is. I don't know."

As he considered all the new projects on his plate, he said, "It feels to me that 'Moonlight's' disappearing out of my grasp. It's sad, but I'm so glad to have been a part of it."

Reminded that Sci Fi now airs "Moonlight" reruns in the same Friday time slot in which it originally aired, he said, "I still haven't been paid for it -- I think I'm still owed a residual for that."

He laughed again.

Thanks, Jade. Yet again, Alex reminds us what we already knew - quite how much he put into Moonlight. As for the JS conversation, :wtf: ?

But, he sounds good - happy and hopeful, as am I, that his star is on the rise.

I'm reminded of a statement that Jason made at the Gala. How soon after "Veronica Mars" was cancelled, he got a call from Joel about a movie, then didn't hear anything from him again. Sounds eerily similiar. But you can tell that it still hurts Alex a bit when he talks about Moonlight. But he's determined to move on. And it also appears that he's very concerned that his fans won't follow him to other roles. Ten months away is a lifetime in Hollywood, so his fear is justified, I guess. But I don't think he has much to worry about around here! ;)

Grrrrrrrr. JS. Grrrrrrrrr. And CBS all but admits it was a mistake? Talk about two villains, two failures... Grrrrrr.

And our poor Alex. But cool that SImon Mirren wrote Vincent just FOR Alex... and cool he got this article.

Nice interview! :rose:

I liked this
As I'm moving into this leading-man phase of my career
He is in a good place now :hearts:

Still heartbroken about ML... Of course, the cancellation was a mistake, everyone knows that.
About the movie, it will be great but :confusing:

That was an interesting article, to say the least. CBS all but admitting canceling ML was a mistake? The phone call with Joel Silver? Hmmm... I know if a movie ever happens, I'll be there on opening night!

It's like Moonlight was Alex's first love. He'll never forget her and he'll always love her. I thought this interview was terrific...just because of those few revealing musings about Moonlight from him.

Hey, darlingcat...this sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Aww, bless his dear heart. The JS call is eerie, was Silver playing with Alex' broken heart or was he serious and it didn't work out? Or was Alex joking? We don't get the tone he said it in.
He is so enthusiastic about life, it's uncanny. And I can't stress enough how good a sign it is that they are promoting the hell out of him at this moment.

So bittersweet to hear him reminisce about ML..at least ALL of us know what a royal screw-up that was..and nice to hear him even mention a ML movie..someday..maybe.. :sigh: He did say in that other interview as well that he still loves the vampire genre and is not adverse to doing something along those lines again...so, time will tell...

But, for now...bring on Vincent and Andy!!!!! :woohoo:

Thanks Jade! WTH is up with JS? :confused2: This one made me a little  . Interesting that "CBS all but officially concedes was a mistake" re: cancellation. Of course I agree, but I haven't read anything to indicate that, so I would assume it's word-of-mouth?
