An Unexpected Gift Challenge. At least I tried.
As she lay in Mick arms, letting herself come back to earth, Beth thought about their evening. She couldn’t put her finger on it exactly but somehow, Mick seemed “off”. Something wasn’t right. He was distracted and preoccupied one minute, and so intense the next. When he looked into her eyes she felt he was staring into her very soul.
Then there were the tangible things, the first being when he greeted her at his door with a single red rose. The loft was awash in candlelight; soft music playing in the background. The table was elegantly set, with a huge bouquet of red roses in the middle. Later, he led her into the candlelit bathroom where there were still more roses. He ran a bubble bath as they sensually undressed each other, though Beth felt he had been undressing her with his eyes all evening. Afterward, he lovingly caressed every part of her with a soft towel, then carried her into the bedroom and laid her on the satin sheets, strewn with rose petals. They made love as if it was the first time and the last time, all rolled together. It had brought Beth to tears.
And now as she spooned in front of him, she wondered what it all meant. Mick began to whisper in her ear.
“Beth, I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
“I want you by my side, always. I want us to be together.” He nuzzled her neck. “I want to give you a gift. The greatest gift I can give you.”
Beth’s eyes popped open, and her heart began to race. “Mick… what…?” He shushed her with a finger to her lips, as he reached under the pillow with his other hand.
“Beth,” his voice cracked as he opened the small box. “My name is the one thing truly my own. I want to give it to you. Will you be Mrs. St. John?”
