"Charles it’s time. Sarah said I spoke to the doctor. Mother can’t live on her own anymore.
"I know Sarah.
"If I tell her, she’ll refuse.
"I’ll take care of it.
Charles walked the short distance past his pool to Anne’s house and knocks.
He hears her shuffling slowly to the door.
"Hello Charles. Come in.
"Anne, how are you doing?
"I’ve had better days.
"Anne I’m sure you’ve heard about this Y2K stuff on the news. Charles said
"Yes, do you think there’s anything to it?
"I don’t know. I’ve taken precautions but I don’t know. Which brings me to the next subject, it’s almost Thanksgiving you should think about staying with us till after New Year’s.
Anne smiled "Charles are you beating around the bush?
"Yes I am. Do you want it straight?
"You’ve always been honest with me before. Why change now?
"It’s time for you to let us take care of you.
"You’ve been doing that for almost fifteen years. Anne said
"Hands on care. You need to live with us. We need to monitor your health very closely.
"Sarah worries too much. Anne said.
"She does, but it’s not just Sarah who thinks it’s time.
"I could say no.
"You could but then Sarah and I and the freshies are going to move into your five room house here. It will be crowded.
"Charles, you wouldn’t do that!
Charles smiled "Move the freshies in, probably not. Sarah and myself definitely."
"You‘re asking me to give up a lot Charles
"I know but I’m not going to tear your house down. Anything you want someone will bring to the main house at a moment’s notice.
"All right Charles. I could never say no to you.
"Let’s pack an overnight bag and Sarah will come over tomorrow and help you pack whatever you need right away.
"Tonight?
"No time like the present.
The next day.
"Mother what do you want me to pack first? Sarah asked
"My books. I need my Agatha Christie mysteries.
"Definitely. What about your videotapes?
"Yes, all my musicals. I’ll pick out some clothes.
"Okay, but don’t pack anything yourself just put them on the bed. I’m so glad you’re moving in with us. Let me pack your creams and makeup and OUCH!
Sarah what’s wrong?
"Nothing, I grabbed your hairbrush.
"The silver one?
Sarah was blowing on her hand. "Yes.
"Let’s get you some blood.
"It’s just a small burn.
"Sit down Sarah! I may be old but I can still take care of minor injuries. I have some blood from when Hope visited last week. She went to the kitchen and brought back a glass
"Drink. Anne ordered.
"Yes ma’am.
Anne watched as Sarah’s burned hand turned pale before her eyes.
"That always amazes me. Anne said.
"Me too.
Anne held her daughter’s hand and kissed it. "See Mother can still make some things better.
"You always could. Sarah said.
