Beth wondered what she was going to get for her birthday tonight. Of course birthdays don’t mean the same thing when you’ve stopped aging.
My twenty-sixth birthday I was with Josh. He had bought me a lovely aquamarine necklace that matched my eyes perfectly.
My twenty-seventh birthday I was with Mick and he bought me the most beautiful sapphire earrings.
My twenty-eighth birthday I was alone. Mick had left for France following a lead on Coraline. I understood in my head why he had to do it but my heart ached.
Today is my official twenty-ninth birthday although I stopped aging six months ago. There were three packages to open.
The first one was a pale blue negligee. Men always gave you what they wanted not what you wanted.
The second box was a ruby bracelet with a note. This trinket pales compared to the blood we’ve shared.
The third box was a first edition of my favorite book Pride and Prejudice. The inscription inside read to My beloved Elizabeth, the strongest person I’ve ever known. With all my love.
Beth sighed contently. She had to decide if she would wear the negligee for Josef tonight or just the bracelet. Either way it would be a night to remember.
