Josef was interviewing a pretty blonde girl for one of his many parties.
So Aquamarine, is that your real name?
She smiled. No. It’s Alana Marie Gleason. If you need my birthdate and social for a background check I totally understand.
Write it down and I’ll have the info before our interview is over but for now let’s just talk. Aquamarine how did you find out about vampires?
I came to LA to try to be an actress. I know what a cliché’. I won a local beauty pageant in New York and I got to shoot a commercial for the mall. I even made 4th runner up in the Miss New York Pageant and then I headed for LA.
Have you had any luck with acting?
No. A couple of small modeling jobs but no acting work. So I wasn’t able to pay my share of the rent and I kept asking my grandmother for loans. She flew out to visit me and told me how I could make some money. She got me an interview at Cache’ and I’ve been working there for three months. I don’t know what shocked me more that vampires existed or that my Grandma used to be a freshie.
Was your mother one as well?
No. Grandma is my Dad’s Mom. He died a few years ago, I don’t think he ever knew about vampires.
So you’re from New York, what was your grandmother’s maiden name?
Anne Marie O’Neill. She worked in the 50’s. She’s 78 now.
Josef was instantly transported back in time.
1955
Anne I told you girls to leave last week. Why do you keep showing up every day?
Charles you have to eat. I know you’re upset about Sarah but…..
Don’t ever say her name again. He growled.
Charles, before things went wrong you asked me to stay for Sa… Mrs. Fitzgerald. She liked me and I agreed to be her donor.
She doesn’t need a donor. Charles said in a defeated tone. It doesn’t matter if she’s fed live blood, dead blood or vampire blood, nothing is helping her to wake up.
Anne took a deep breath. Charles I’m worried about you. It’s obvious you haven’t eaten since…..
Since I murdered my wife.
Since her unfortunate accident. It’s not your fault Charles, it’s like how some people die from getting their tonsils removed. It just happened.
Just leave Anne.
No.
I’m warning you, I’m about to lose my temper.
Sarah would never forgive me for letting you waste away.
Sarah will never know.
Charles what happens to her if you die?
He was tired and hungry and Anne’s question confused him. What do you mean?
Charles you haven’t destroyed her body so you must have hope for a cure. If you die who will take care of her? Have you set up a trust fund? What about if she exists for 200 years and your money runs out? You’ll leave her to die of starvation?
How dare you? Charles shoved Anne up against a wall. How dare you come in my house and talk to me like this?
You might be able to kill me today Charles. If you don’t start feeding soon enough I’ll be able to beat you in a fight. Who will protect Sarah then? Charles her parents are still looking for her, have you covered all your tracks?
He shook his head. He hadn’t thought about anything but his loss in days. Anne was right there were things he had to take care of.
Charles. Let me feed you. Look at your situation clearly and then decide what you’re going to do.
He realized she was right. Anne. I don’t trust myself. I’m so hungry, I could hurt you. I’m going to call a former donor who’s a nurse. She’ll withdraw a pint of blood and I will drink it, I promise you. I might not be able to stop from the tap.
All right. I’ll wait upstairs.
Charles drank that day for the first time since Sarah’s coma. Anne helped him get on his feet and interviewed new donors for him so no one would ever mention Sarah. When he relocated to California he left a small fortune to Anne who still donated a pint of blood every six weeks to Sarah Whitley Fitzgerald.
Josef returned to the present. Aquamarine, who did your grandmother work for?
I don‘t know. She said if a vampire is good to you, you owe him the courtesy of never revealing his name.
I’d like to hire you for my party next week. After that we’ll talk about the future.
You won’t be disappointed Mr. Kostan.
