Beth left Mick’s apartment angry, confused and frustrated. She beat speed records driving home. She burst into the house like a hurricane screaming that she was hungry. She grabbed the new girl Summer and bit harshly into her wrist.
Summer tried very hard not to yell but Beth was not gentle. Even her sucking was more like a tug of war instead of a gentle pull from the vein.
Josef walked into the living room and said. Beth. Release!
I’m hungry. She noticed the bruises on Summer’s arm but didn’t let go.
He grabbed Beth and pulled her off Summer. The poor girl ran from the room in tears.
Beth, he growled. You do not take out your frustrations on my loyal employees. If that happens again I’ll have you on bottled dead blood before you can retract.
Your employees??? I thought the freshies were community property.
It’s only community property if I’m married. Where’s your ring?
Josef I can explain.
I’m dying to hear it.
I thought it would be too much for him if he found out I was married.
Then why did you keep your engagement ring on? If you had taken both off I could have understood that. I probably would have agreed with you; he’s not in the best frame of mind. But why do you want to dangle in front of him that you’re involved but not committed enough to be married. Did you just want to hurt him? Or are you saving that all for me?
Josef had always been her rock. It never occurred to her that she could really hurt him.
Beth suddenly realized if she wasn’t honest with him right here and now she could lose him. She desperately did not want that to happen.
Josef when he left me, I was crushed. I couldn’t believe saving Coraline was more important then staying with me. I couldn’t believe he chose her. Then days turned to weeks and before I knew it he was gone for two years. I was sure he was dead.
So was I. Josef said calmly.
Then I fell in love with you. I put Mick behind me.
Did you?
Yes. I should have never gone. I should have let you take care of it like we planned.
Beth you’re not a prisoner. You know where the door is. If you want to go back with him I told you I’d stand aside but I won’t play games. If you want him, I’m not a back-up plan.
I don’t want him but seeing him stirred up old feelings. I wanted to see if he still loved me. I wanted to hurt him like I was hurt when he went after Coraline. I wanted to rub silver in an open wound and tell him about us.
When did he notice the engagement ring?
When I shoved it in his face and told him I was involved with someone.
Someone? Josef said angrily. Did you forget my name or just not want to use it?
Beth was ashamed. I wanted to drag it out. I was like a cat playing with a mouse. I wanted to destroy him with it.
I taught you not to play with your food.
I know.
I succeeded. He was crushed. When I saw that, I didn’t want him to lose both of us. I thought if he didn’t know we were married the two of you could remain friends somehow.
Beth, I don’t know if that’s possible. Mick has always been passionate about the women he’s loved. Not that I don’t love you passionately but…
You’re a realist.
I like to think I am. Beth, do you want to be my wife?
Yes.
Then we’re going over to Mick’s right now and tell him you lied about our engagement and we’ve been married for a year.
Do you think he can handle it?
He has no choice.
