And from her brief appearances in Arrested Development, Beth's "friend" Marissa made quite the impression.
Signs: A Marissa Drabble
I was telling Beth, the universe was sending her a sign. And when her phone rang, she smirked and told me, “It’s not Josh.” I really thought they were a great couple. He’s a super guy. Better than she deserves, if she’s going to treat him like that. I mean, really. I’d kill for a man like that, even if he did burn the chicken. She’s running off to that P.I. she told me about, I just know it. Poor Josh, I think it’s time for me to give him a call. Maybe the universe is sending me a sign.

Yup, that's exactly the vibe I got from her. Testing the waters. It's great what you can do with 100 words.
This is #1001.

I always wondered about that visit of hers to Buzzwire. It seemed so weird that she'd come by Beth's workplace to talk about something so personal. And Beth seemed pretty wary of her.
I think on the "Beth's journal" that was up on the CBS site at one time, she was described as a frenemy, so that's probably on the money, Luxe.

It was odd that she came to Beth like that. Very interesting.

Yep. You nailed her--her breezy tone, her pseudo-caring exterior, and her sneaky hidden agenda. She really IS a frienemy.

I guess I am the only one who just took Marissa at face value, as a girlfriend who thought Beth needed a gentle nudge toward doing what she believed Beth was moving toward--a closer relationship with Josh. When Beth threw up a couple of roadblocks, and Marissa asked if there was someone else, I didn't feel that she was a threat.
But I am as gullible as as they come.
Very nicely done!
Thanks, Lucky!

ΦΙΛΟΣ--
ΦΙΔΙ In Greek, the words
''friend'' and ''snake'' begin with the same syllable (greek proverb)...you showed that in just a few words, librarian, exactly as it hit me in the series...

Very good.
I still like Marissa, and I guess I am the only one.
Thank you!

The thing I liked about Marissa was that her role was not defined, really. On the surface, she was a straightforward supporter of Beth's and Josh's relationship... except for the tone of her voice, and a bit of a look in her eye. So to me, it's all in how you interpret those things. Friend of the couple? Friend of Josh's? Frienemy of Beth's?
I see Marissa as a person who wouldn't
think of overtly trying to break Josh and Beth up... but she also wouldn't mind at all if Beth and Josh DID break up, because she thinks Josh deserves better than he's getting from Beth. And hey--if she thinks that, she's right.

I wish that Josh didn't die and Beth had to confront him with her growing attraction to Mick. I always felt that with Marrissa around Josh wouldn't be alone for long.

Another gem I've missed!
Lucky, you pegged Marissa exactly right, IMO. I always felt she had her eye on Josh. Frenemy fits her.
(And I've written a couple of fics that have been rather hard on Marissa.
