A (Warm and Chilly) Moonlit Christmas Card
The peak of Mount Shasta sweeps upward and though
It lies many miles to the south, there’s still snow
That blanketed summit--can't see it from here--
Is still there in memory, vivid and clear
I skiied there with Dad, when like regular folk
Our crystaline laughter hung heavy like smoke...
I borrowed this cabin for two weeks, and so
Beth agreed to take time from her work, and to go.
I wanted to spend Christmas with her--that's clear
Would she come? I'll admit to a moment of fear
She could go anywhere, and could live life quite free
Of all complications, restrictions, and…me.
But she smiled, simply kissed me, and said 'course I'll go'
Like a foregone conclusion, something that I should know.
I've grown used to losing--it was a surprise
To find much I thought gone--shining there in her eyes
My senses are sharpened, but I didn't see
That not all I treasured was taken from me.
We drove through a blizzard to get here today
(Sharing stories of Christmases past on the way)
Beth shared a tradition, her Grandfather taught
Of telling the blessings each new year had brought
I thought it was silly, but quite charming, too
And very much like what my Mom had us do.
Beth warned me early (so I could prepare)
But I wasn’t sure there would be much I could share
Still, I promised to give it some thought, and I’ve found
That the blessings I once thought were absent abound
Guess it took her to get me to see it, so then
The child that I saved has saved me once again.
Though I still have to shun all the warmth from the fires
I can cling to the warmth that my Beth’s love inspires
My life is quite full---in this odd living death
If my wife hadn’t Turned me, I’d have never met Beth
It's less what we meet than the way that we spin it
Our choice of perspective can change in a minute
So I won't keep Beth waiting--I'll just go inside
And toast to the blessings of this year’s Yuletide.
To all of you out there, wherever you roam
May you find joy this Christmas, and find your way home.

Thank you so much for reading!
I have to confess (if you haven't all figured it out by now) that I love sentimental stuff.
Thank you for your very kind comment!

Thank you so much!! You have been so encouraging in what I call 'my greeting card writing' that I had to try this out and it was so much fun.
True to form, I post and can't stop the editing process so I have made some changes (some to meet the this months' challenge and some to fix cadence issues I didn't see before.
I so appreciate your encouraging words and your gracious comment!
Thank you!

Thank you so much! That is so sweet of you to say!
This was so much fun to write. I just can't seem to stop tinkering with it. It started with making a few changes in it so that it would work with this months Champaign Challenge, then I had to make a few more changes to fix cadence problems I didn't see before.
Hopefully, it improves with the edits. At least, that's the plan.
Thanks again!

Thank you so much for reading my setmental little greeting card verse.
You got it exactly!
One of those lovely little cyclical truths in Moonlght was that while Mick saved little Beth when Coraline kidnapped her in an attempt to save a failing mariage, Beth also saved Mick--whether it is the grown up Beth that saved him from a loveless eternity, or his act of saving her, turning his back on the darkness that Coraline chose to embrace then--it all works.
Mick is still a vampire, but he is far from a monster.
Once again-thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Thank you so much for reading this little verse.
You got it exactly, too!
The event where Mick rescued Beth as a chld was so pivotal. He moved from being Coraline's fledgling to being his own man. Later, she would rescue him from a life in which be believed himself a monster.
Thanks again for reading.
