When you live as long as I have, experience teaches you that feelings can lead you to do things that are…at best unwise. In time, I learned to think things through--and take a longer view. It really has nothing to do with being a vampire.

When I didn't, I was like a ship under full sail without a functioning rudder--driven by the wind. Once I learned to pick my destination and hold my course, no matter how I felt about it, I got very, very rich.

Now I know better. I no longer follow my feelings.

…except when I do.

The first thought that came to me about this drabble was the last two lines--that setup of not being ruled by his feelings...except when he is. Josef has had a lot of years to learn to play the game, yet he is still driven by the same passions that drive us all sometimes.

No matter how sure we are on the correct course of action to take, sometimes we all do the same thing. It is something that humanizes the vampires.

When I was learning to play Bridge, I would get so frustrated with all the rules. I remember my dad saying that I would have to suffer through learning the "correct" way to play... and finally, when the rules became second nature, I would be able to decide whether to follow the rules or not. That is where Josef is in the game of life. He knows what to do...and most of the time, he does what he "should" do. Then there are those other times...

At first I thought this was Mick talking, but then I got a Josef vibe. He's always in control and you can see it. But sometimes he allows himself to fall, like with Sarah, and that makes him vulnerable. He never goes into it with closed eyes, though. Love this!

Josef is a fascinating character, but sometimes I wonder if we really see the real Josef or one of many masks he wears. When you live as long as he did, you must get very, very good at facades.
