Brian walked past the house he grew up in. It had been years since he had left behind an alcoholic mother and her thug boyfriend. He stood on the pavement in front of the house which had been since sold and made over. It looked the way a home should. An older woman came from around back with a basket of tomatoes in her hand.
“I’m sorry. Can I help you?” She said in a nervous voice.
“Sorry for the intrusion. My name is Brian Petzer. I grew up here” He said.
The woman immediately laid down her basket and walked towards the young man. She had heard the sad story of the previous owners. An alcoholic mother who sold her only child and killed her husband for his pension.
“Mr. Petzer. It’s very nice to meet you….I’m very sorry. I know your memories of this house might not be the best” She said holding her hand out to him. Brian took her hand and shook it lightly.
“No. They weren’t. I do love what you’ve done to the place” he said.
She openly stared at the young man in the designer suit.
“Would you like to come in and see the rest of the house?” She asked.
Brian thought for a moment.
“If you wouldn’t mind?” he said.
“Of course not. My name is Helen DuPont” She said picking up her basket and leading him to the porch. She opened up the door and Brian gasped.
A wall had been knocked down giving the place an open airy feel. The kitchen he remembered as a filthy butter yellow, but now was soft baby blue with checkered curtains. Plants and flowers were in every room.
“I’m really into gardening…I know it’s a lot of foliage” She joked.
Brian shook his slowly.
“I think it looks beautiful” He choked out. “Um….I was wondering….”
Helen nodded.
“You want to see where he was buried?”
“Yes” Brian said.
Helen took his arm and led him outside. Flowers took up most of the back yard as well as a small vegetable garden. She led him to a small tree.
“It was right there.” She pointed below the tree. Brian kneeled down for a moment trying capture his father’s last moments on Earth.
“That’s why my husband and I planted an apple tree here. No one should be forgotten like that.” She said sadly. Brian stood up and hugged her.
“Thank you so much Helen. You have a wonderful heart” He said. “But I should go. I’ve taken up enough of your time.”
“You feel free to come by anytime you like. Are you married?”
“Yes. My wife and I recently had a baby girl”
“Congratulations! Yes. Please come by and let your family see the place where you were born.” Helen said.
“Thank you again.” Brian said as he walked away.

Helen watched the young man walk slowly away and thought not for the first time, how cruel life could be to those so good.

Brian hurried quickly to his car and drove home. It was so odd, but he had never thought of himself as a father. He thought that he might be so damaged from his own upbringing, that he would make a very unsuitable parent. But being around Mila had changed him. He now saw that there was more to life than money and power. There was so much more he was capable of. Josef had been wonderful, allowing him to take all the time he needed to be with his new family.

He walked in the door and Abigail immediately began to crawl towards him.
“You’re just in time for the evening feeding” Nicole said with tired smile.
“Of course” Brian said rolling up his sleeve and picking his daughter up. Abigail began to feed from her father’s arm.
“Do you think that Julian might find us a freshie for this?” She wondered.
“Perhaps, when she is older, but for now I think our blood is best” Brian said smiling down at his daughter.
“I can see you are going to spoil her rotten” Nicole laughed.
“You got that right” he joked.
“Why are you so late?” Nicole asked looking at the time.
“I don’t know why, but I drove by the house where I grew up.” Brian said.
Nicole had heard the stories from Zoe. Brian’s mother and her boyfriend had killed his dad to get his pension checks. They buried him the backyard. It was an awful story.
“Brian are you alright?”
“Yes. I’m fine. I met the woman who owns the house now. She’s very nice. She showed me around and showed me where my father was found….she planted an apple tree in that very same spot as a sort of remembrance.”
“Oh Brian! That is so sweet!” Nicole said suddenly.
“She suggested I bring you and Abigail to see it.”
“Brian we would love to! Anytime!” She said kissing her husband

Josef looked up when he saw Brian walk in to his office.
“Brian! Good to have you back!” he said getting up and shaking his hand.
“Good to be back sir” Brian said.
“So have seat.” Josef motioned. “How’s fatherhood?”
Brian took the chair across from Josef.
“It’s amazing sir. I can hardly believe it”
“Well stranger things have happened. But I’m glad that you and Nicole are happy” Josef said. “Are you ready to get back to work?”
“Am I ever!” Brian said.

Helen DuPont grew up in Sacramento California. Her mother gave birth to her in a time when women didn't have children out of wedlock. Helen never knew her father until he died. Charles David Petzer. A roguish railroad worker who Helen was told could charm the bloomers off any woman. When her mother told her of her father on her deathbed, Helen told herself she would do whatever she could to find this man. But she was too late. When she found his little house, she saw the condemned sign in front. It was by far the worse house on the street which had gone through a lot of rebuilding. She talked her husband into buying the place for a song. It took them almost a year before they could move in. And when she started to plant her garden, that when she found her father. Some of the older neighbors told her of the sad little boy who was always alone with two terrible drunkards. They told her how a rich man by the name of Josef Kostan had taken the boy under his wing and paid the family off. And now she had come face to face with her little brother! Who would have thought that things would turn out this way.

Intriguing start!

It looks like Brian has a human family he didn't know about and it is a genuinely nice one! I hope she comes to know about vampires and reacts well to their existence.

Looking forward to the next chapter!

Thank yu!

Two weeks had passed since Brian had visited his old home, but he was still surprised when Helen DuPont showed up at Kostan Industries.
“Mrs. DuPont!” He said in surprise. “How very nice to see you again”
“Mr. Petzer, I hope you don’t mind my coming unannounced, but everyone on the block speaks of how well you’re doing here.” She said looking around. “Is there someplace we might speak privately?” She said nervously
“Of course, come to my office” He said showing her in and offering her a chair. “What can I do for you?” He asked.
‘Well I was born in Sacramento California. My mother’s name Lillian Walsh…” She said slowly seeing if the name rang any bells with him. But Brian said nothing just sat back and waited patiently.
Helen reached into her purse and pulled out an envelope and slid it towards him.
“This is my birth certificate” She said.
Brian opened the envelope and unfolded the documents.
“Helen Margaret Petzer” he read slowly. “Mother Lillian Jean Walsh, Father Charles David Petzer…..where did you get this?” Brian said suddenly.
“I’ve always had it.” She said.
“Look, I’m not sure what kind of con you trying to run, but my father had no other children!” Brian said stuffing the document back into the envelope and handing it back to her. Helen reached inside her purse again and brought out a stack of old photos. She pointed at the first one.
“This is your father….my father with my mother on New years eve, 1962 right before I was born.”
Brian looked at the photo closely. It was an original. And it was his father. He had seen many pictures of his father in his younger days.
“I don’t understand. Why didn’t anyone know?” Brian asked.
“Mr. Petzer. Look closely at my mother’s photo” She said.
Brian looked closely at the photo of the beautiful woman with the bouffant hairdo.
“She’s very pretty” He said.
“She was African American” Helen said. Brian looked at the photo again. Then he noticed the slightly exotic features and light dusting of caramel of her skin.
“I fail to see what the point is” Brian said.
Helen sighed with a small smile.
“Oh to be born in this decade. Mr. Petzer, this was during the time of civil right movement. Blacks and whites could be thrown in jail for simply holding hands or lynched.” She explained. Then Brian understood. During those turbulent times a relationship like that would have been disastrous for all involved. That’s why at times it seemed like his father could barely stand his mother. Why they barely spoke. Brian stood up nervously.
“I’m sorry I should have offered you something to drink” He stammered.
“No thank you Mr. Petzer” She began.
“It’s Brian. Just Brian” He said.
“Nice to meet you formally Brian. I’m Helen” She said smiling.

“So, how did you find our father after all those years?” Brian asked.
“Well my mother died of cancer and before she passed on she gave me that photo of our father and told me to find him. His name was written on the back. Since all I had was name and nothing else, I didn’t know where to start. And one day I was sitting in church praying to God for help and I swear God spoke to me and said I would find him in Los Angeles. Of course I arrived too late, but I wanted to buy the house in case someone came to ask about him.” She said wiping her eyes with a tissue.

In this day and age, skepticism seems to be the first response to almost everything, but somehow I don't think Helen has any motives here other than to connect with her roots. I suspect that any lie would be uncovered quickly.

What a positive addition to his life she would be. I think I said something like that in a previous post, but not only for Brian but for his wife and child, as well.

The huge next step is going to be, how will she react to the existence of vampires and all that comes with them!

Looking forward to more!

Thank you!

You're welcome Jen!

Brian sat back in his chair. He had a sister all this time. When he thought about all those times when he felt like he had no one to talk to. All those times when just having someone to listen to what he had to say would have been a blessing. How could his father have deprived him of this!

“Brian. Can you tell me what our father was like?” Helen asked.
“Helen…..” Brian began.
“I just want to know what my mother saw in him”
“That I can’t answer. He was I think very handsome….and there were times when he was sober, you could catch a glimpse of the man he used to be, before the alcohol, but over all, I feel he was lost. What you’ve told me makes perfect sense. He must have loved Lillian very much.” Brian relied.
“Thank you Brian.” She said “I want to thank you for taking this time to speak to me, and…my offer still stands. My husband and I would love to have your family over dinner. Anytime.” She said standing up to take her leave. Brian walked over to her and gave her a hug.

“Wow!” Gabriel said looking at his friend. “A sister?”
“Yes. I can’t believe my father would keep that from me”
“Well Brian, you have to look at what was going on the 1960’s.”
“I know. I know. But what should I do now. I mean, I think she wants to be part of a family.”
“Why not?”
“I already have a family” Brian said
“So you think mom and dad will be disappointed? Feel like they have been replaced? Honestly Brian, do you really think you could ever replace us?” Gabriel laughed out loud.
“Now that I think about it. I guess not” Brian said laughing.

Brian and Nicole pulled up to the house. Nicole carefully took Abigail out of her car seat. Brian held a pecan pie that Amy insisted on making. The smell was rather nauseating, but they were only stopping by for a short visit.

A tall man came to the front door.
“Honey! They’re here!” he called out. “Welcome! I have to say it is a pleasure to meet you Brian. Helen hasn’t stopped talking about you since she met you” He said holding out his hand. “I’m Jeff”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you. This is my wife Nicole and our daughter Abigail” Brian said as they walked into the house. Helen appeared out of the kitchen with a tray of coffee.
“Brian! Thank you so much for coming.” She said sitting the tray down. She gave Nicole a hug and gushed over baby. "Oh she is such a beautiful baby" Helen said caressing the baby's cheek. And Abigail thinking she had an offering, latched on to Helen's finger and wouldn't let go!

That's cute. The vampires brought a pecan pie.

While that is perhaps the socially correct thing to do, honesty would be nice and yet they may feel they need to work up to it. I remember Mick telling Beth that 'he gets it. It's a lot to...get.'

Thank you!

Helen pulled her finger away and looked up at Brian in shock in surprise. How could she have not sensed it? Her brother was a vampire!

Nicole quickly held Abigail close to her and tugged gently on Brian’s hand.
“I’m very sorry…….I don’t know what possessed Abigail to do that…” Nicole stammered. “Brian maybe we should go” She said.

Jeff smiled at his wife.
“No worries Nicole. The little one is just hungry” He said with a wide smile that showed his fangs.

“How is this possible?” Brian said in surprise. “I would have known before entering the house”

“My wife and I are part of the Candiat bloodline.” Jeff said. Nicole looked at Brian in disbelief.
“What does that mean?” She asked
“Water vamps can go undetected by other vampires. It’s a defense mechanism.” Brian explained. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Brian, please try to understand. When I decided to buy this house, I had no idea our father had another child. And when you came to the house……and you were also a vampire…..well…I knew that all of this had to have happened for a reason.” Helen said.

Now I certainly didn't see that one coming!

This could be absolutely fabulous! They are really family now!

I only hope this particular branch of the tribe is friendly!

Thank you!

“Wow!” Josef said after Brian told him.
“Indeed” Brian replied.
“I don’t even know what to say exactly…..and they’re water vamps? I’ve only come across a couple in my entire 420 years…wow! And she’s your sister?” Josef said in disbelief. “Are you going to stay in contact with them?”
“I don’t see how I can not. Gabriel and Zoe want to have a party so they can invite them.” Brian said.
“Well, let’s just see if we can keep this a peaceful week. I mean is that too much to ask?” Josef said.

“Gabe!!” Zoe yelled out as she yanked open the door and threw her arms around the older woman. “Welcome! I’m Zoe St. John and this is my husband Gabriel. Please come in!”
Helen and Jeff walked slowly in. Never before had they ever been surrounded by so many vampires. “Let me introduce you…This is Julian, this is Josef and his wife Isabelle. These are Gabriel and Brian’s parents Mick and Beth, this is Balthazar, and this is my best friend Amy and her husband Ted and their little girl Mila” Zoe said breathlessly.
“It is a pleasure to meet you all” Jeff said. “I have to say we’ve never seen this many vampires in one place before.”
“We’ve been expanding lately” Josef said with casual smile. “We even managed a couple of vampire births!”
Helen looked at Mick and Beth.
“And you are Brian’s parents?”
“Yeah we are” Mick said.
Helen walked over to him and took his hands in hers.
“God bless you both” She said.
Mila studied the couple.
“What can you do?” She asked in a very clear voice older than her years
“Do? “ Jeff asked.
“You are water vamps are you not? That must mean something” Mila said.
“Oh…well, we’re not really sure exactly, but I discovered not long ago that I could do this.” Jeff said grabbing a glass of water and sticking his finger inside. The water immediately started to boil the steam was rising out of the glass. Mila’s eyes opened wide excited by what she saw.
“However” Helen said. “We don’t know what this means. Jeff had only been a vampire for 5 years when we met. We fell in love and he turned me shortly afterwards.” She explained.

Everyone welcomed the couple and made them feel at home. Brian surveyed the room.
“What is it my Lord?” Isabelle whispered.
“I feel like someone has orchestrated all of this” He said.
“Lucifer?” She asked anxiously.
“No.” Brian said. “The other one”

Lucifer sat in his mansion his anger overtaking him.
“I suppose you are responsible for this?” He yelled to his guest.
“Lucifer you should know by now that mankind has free will. What they do they do on their own” His guest replied in a quiet voice.
“But you orchestrated this silly little reunion!”
“You know I did not. You have lost. Your disciple now has faith.” The guest replied and vanished from sight.
“Damn you!” Lucifer cried out to the empty room.

“Well Brian we have just concluded a week where the only thing extraordinary was you meeting your long lost sister” Josef said
“Yes sir. I have to say it was a very peaceful week indeed. However it is not over just yet.” Brian said looking at his watch.
“Don’t jinx it Brian” Josef said.

The End.
