Josef was picking up all the glasses after everyone but Mick had left.
“That was a great game! I can’t believe Kobe made that shot from half court!” Mick was saying
“Did Carl seem a bit off to you?” Josef asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know. He just didn’t appear to be in to it”
“Maybe he’s working on a case” Mick said with a shrug.
“Yeah that could be it”
Carl drove to his apartment and took off his jacket. He looked all around. Everything was neat and in its place just how he liked it. The perfect bachelor’s pad. He took a cold beer out of the fridge and sat down on the sofa.
He was tired of being alone. He was 37 years old and hadn’t had one successful relationship. Either women were turned off by the awful crimes he had to work on, or they were sick to death of the long hours his job required.
But he loved being a cop. Always had. He couldn’t give it up. Not even for love.
Josef watched Isabelle. She really was brilliant. Carl needed someone like that. Someone confident and fearless. He glanced around his building. There had to be one unattached lady who fit the bill.
“Isabelle” He called out to her.
“Yes.” She replied.
“Say you were trying to fix Carl up with someone who works here. Who would you choose?” Josef asked. Isabelle looked at her husband for a moment.
“Angela Mason” Isabella said finally.
“Angela….she’s in the legal department right?”
“No. that would be Andrea Tisdale. Really Josef you must get to know your own employees. Angela is your lead accountant” Isabelle said.
Now Josef remembered. A beautiful, no nonsense woman with long hair and mysterious hazel eyes.
“Angela would be perfect!” Josef said.
“Do not meddle in the love lives of others my darling.”
“I’m not meddling. I’m just going to introduce them” He said innocently.
Isabelle sighed.
“Ok, but you have been warned” She said and walked out shaking her beautiful head.
Angela Mason had worked for Kostan Industries for seven years and she enjoyed her job. Josef Kostan looked every bit of the young playboy, but he had a very formidable business mind, and she loved watching him crush his competition.
“Angela, do you have a moment?” She heard Josef say to her.
“Of course, Mr. Kostan” she said following him into his office.
“Angela, Isabelle and I will be throwing a party this weekend and we would like to invite you” Josef said.
Angela stared at her employer. Josef Kostan was inviting her to a party?
“Well……of course I’d love to come. You want me to schmooze a potential client..or…” She stammered.
“Oh nothing like that. Strictly social. You do a wonderful job here. I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate all of your hard work.” Josef explained.
“Okay….thank you Mr. Kostan” She said nervously.
“Great. So here’s the address. Cocktail attire. Don’t be late.” He said handing her a slip of paper.
Angela watched him walk away and slowly shook her head. Trying to understand the whims of Josef Kostan was a hopeless endeavor.

Josef always threw fabulous parties and he always went all out. For this party he hired a famous DJ from Japan who kept the music going all through the night. Wolfgang Puck provided the food and the champagne continued to flow.
Angela checked herself once more before knocking on the door.
“Angela! I am so glad you could make it!” Isabelle said showing her inside. Angela looked all around amazed at the opulence of her employer’s home.
“Thank you for inviting me” Angela said.
Josef saw that Angela had finally arrived and he looked around for Carl who he saw was talking to Brian and Nicole.
“Angela, glad to see you made it.” Josef said walking towards her.
“Yes. And again, thank you for inviting me.”
“Let me introduce you to some people” Josef said. “You know Brian Petzer and his wife Nicole?”
“Yes. Very nice to see you. And congratulations on the birth of your child” Angela said with a smile.
“Thank you Angela” Brian said.
“And this is my good friend Carl Davis. He’s a detective for the LAPD” Josef said.
Carl looked at the lovely lady standing in front of him
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Carl said with a slow smile.
Angela stared at handsome detective and smiled brightly.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well.” She said offering her hand.
Mick came up behind his friend.
“What do you think you’re doing Josef” Mick asked.
“Throwing an awesome party is what I’m doing” Josef joked.
“Who’s the long legged beauty talking to Carl?”
“Angela Mason. They make a good looking couple.”
“Josef?” Mick started to say.
“Hey if they hit it off great. If they don’t great. I’m just saying.” Josef said with shrug
Carl thought Angela was amazing. Not only was she breathtakingly beautiful, she was smart and funny as well. Just when he was about to give up on love all together, here came the perfect woman.

Fabulous.
Carl should find love, too.
That being said, Isabel is probably right. If things don't work out, Josef will be the one blamed by both, fairly or unfairly.
Looking forward to the next chapter!
Thank you!

Mick, Josef, and Carl sat around watching the Oakland Raiders game.
“Carl, where did you sneak off to on Friday? I was looking around for you and you were gone.” Josef said casually.
“Oh yeah. Sorry about that. I went to….uh get some coffee with a woman I met.” He said slowly. Mick and Josef both looked at Carl with interest.
“Who was it?” Josef asked.
“Look Josef. I don’t want to get this woman in any trouble.” Carl began to say.
“Ah, so she’s an employee!” Josef said with a grin. “No worries Carl. I don’t keep my employees on so short of a leash that I monitor their dating habits.”
“Good. Because I really like her” Carl said turning back to the game.
Josef smiled brightly and all Mick could do was shake his head.
Angela came into work on Monday in great spirits. She had a wonderful time with Carl. They left the party and went to hear some Jazz music at a nearby coffee shop then they walked and talked for what seemed like hours.
The kiss he left her with at her door left no doubt of his interest and she was looking forward to his call. She turned to find Josef walking into her office.
“Good morning Mr. Kostan.” She said professionally.
“Good morning Angela. Did you have a good time on Friday?” He asked taking the chair across from her desk.
“Yes I did. Thank you for inviting me.” She said.
“I noticed that you left with Lt. Davis.” He said.
“Yes. We went to get coffee. He is a very nice man” She said trying to not sound like a high school girl with a crush.
“Carl is a very nice man. Congratulations.” Josef said standing up. “I’ll see you in 15 minutes. Howard Carlson is here with the contract”
“Yes sir” she said and got about to work.
“What are you so happy about?” One Carl’s police officers asked with a surprise smile. “Did you catch Public enemy #1?”
“Nothing. Just in a good mood. Don’t you have work to do?” Carl said suddenly.
Isabelle and Beth were having drinks at a café near Kostan Industries.
“So Josef has decided to add matchmaker to his extensive resume” Isabelle said with a smile.
“Yeah, Mick told me. I saw the woman. She was beautiful”
“Beauty is not what it always seems as Carl very well knows.” Isabelle said seriously.
“You’re talking about Michelle Rubin aka Dominique Malkin? Don’t you think this is different? I mean she works for Josef” Beth said.
“I know and perhaps I worry for no reason, but Carl has become such a loyal ally I would hate to see that relationship end due to matchmaking efforts by Josef”
Beth had to admit what Isabelle said made perfect sense.
“Would you like me to do some looking into her background to make sure there are no surprises?” Beth asked.
“That is an excellent idea” Isabelle said.
By the end of the week Beth had found nothing in Angela Mason’s background that would give anyone cause for alarm.
She was born in upstate New York. Both her parents were teachers. She had one brother who was in the Air Force. She was straight A student. Graduated with Honors from Columbia University. Worked for Edward Jones Investments for five years before coming to Los Angeles to work for Kostan Industries. She had no record. Not even a jaywalking ticket. Beth breathed a sigh of relief. Carl really needed to find a trustworthy woman. Michelle had really done a number on him. She didn’t want to see her friend hurt again.
Carl and Angela had seen each other every night of that week. Sometimes just meeting and walking around a different neighborhood. They took in a free concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The music wasn’t much to Carl’s liking but he enjoyed dancing with Angela and watching her sing all the lyrics to Michael Buble's songs.
As the third week passed Angela knew she was falling for the handsome detective and it scared her to death.
Mick and Carl were closing out and armed robbery case they had both worked on.
“So how are things? I haven’t seen you in weeks?” Mick said.
“Things are good Mick….look I might as well tell you. I’ve been seeing this woman. She’s employed by Josef. Her name is Angela Mason. She’s an Accountant and things are great man. I don’t want to jinx it, but this could be it for me” he said with a happy sigh.
“Carl that’s great!” Mick said truly happy for his friend.
Angela was in court all morning but her secretary came into Josef’s office.
“Mr. Kostan. A gentleman is at the front desk for Ms. Mason. He says he is her husband” She said in whispered tones. Josef looked up sharply. Husband?

The man who stood at the front desk was an average looking man with a 5-day stubble. On the whole the exact opposite of any man Josef could ever imagine her with.
“Hello, I’m Josef Kostan” Josef said walking towards the man. Just then he saw Brian turning the corner. “Brian, come here for a second.” Josef said to him. Brian walked over. “Brian, this is Angela Mason’s husband” Josef said carefully. Brian picked up on Josef’s tone.
“Very pleased to meet you. I had no idea Angela was married” Brian said holding out his hand.
The man stared at the two gentlemen not knowing what to say.
“W…well we were quite young” He stammered. “Is she in?” He asked.
“I’m afraid that Angela is in court all morning. Would you care to wait?” Josef asked.
“No, no. I can come back another time..” He said and quickly walked towards the elevator.
“Follow him” Josef hissed and Brian took off behind the man.
Brian followed the man to a seedy motel right outside of Van Nuys. Brian closed his eyes and let his mind see inside the motel room.
The man was junkie that Brian knew from the way his hands shook, the heavy bags under his eyes, and faint bluish tint the skin that he tried to hide under his shirtsleeves. Whatever this man’s plans were they were of no good to Angela or Kostan Industries. He went inside the motel room and immediately grabbed the man by the neck.
“What are you doing here?” The man croaked out trying to break free.
“I want to know what you want with Angela Mason!” Brian said.
“I…I told you. She’s my wife!”
“Let me see your proof” Brian said holding him a bit tighter.
“Proof…..what do you mean” The man said gasping trying to breathe.
“I mean you have a marriage license”
“Uh…no. N…not with me, I mean”
“I see. Well why don’t we just find out for ourselves” Brian calmly said taking out his phone and calling Josef. Within minutes Josef had the information.
“I just heard from my contact that you and Angela were divorced 6 years ago. So again, why are you here?” Brian said in a menacing voice.
“Look, I just needed some money. Just a little bit to help me on my feet here in L.A.”
“So you thought you would blackmail her into helping you? I don’t think so!” Brian said turning the man around to look him in the eye.
“What you are going to do is get the hell out of Los Angeles! Immediately! And if you aren’t gone by morning, trust me. I will find you!” Brian hissed at the man Eyes glowing bright red. Brian threw the man on the filthy bed and tossed some cash at him. “Be gone by tomorrow!” Brian said finally and left the motel.
It took Carl exactly 13 months to pop the questions. And when he did Angela had tears in her eyes as she accepted and threw her arms around his neck. Josef threw them a large engagement party to celebrate.
“So how did you know this would work Josef?” Mick asked him quietly.
“I didn’t have a clue, but every man needs a shot at happiness. I guess I’m getting soft in my old age” Josef joked.
Yeah, who would have thought” Mick laughed.
Isabelle watched the scene. Perhaps all would work out. But she knew Josef too well. And while Carl was a good friend his loyalty would always be to the LAPD. But Angela’s loyalty would always be to Josef Kostan.

Oh, nice ending, but do Carl and Angela live happily ever after or does Angela's ex show up again? I see a wonderful opportunity for Gabe to plant another mental suggestions and straighten out a life.
Thank you!

I'm happy for Carl. For Josef it was a good business decision too, because now he can be sure of Carl's loyalty. Angela's ex needed a kick and that's what Brian provided. I think Gabe's talent is a bit too dangerous, so straigthening out everyone they meet might be a bit complicated.

Maybe...even though it worked out so well with Brian, there was another case when it didn't work out well at all. Francis has a point.

Agreed. There have been too many instances where the mind thing just didn't work.
