October, 1986
Rory couldn’t believe it. The California State Lottery just started last week and she had all the numbers. The prize was $100,000 but she knew in her heart she couldn't claim it.
She had been living in Josef’s house for the last three years. One of the biggest rules was not to draw public attention to yourself. The first lottery winner was definitely going to be public. While Josef paid her well there was no way she was ever going to have $100,000 at one time.
She didn’t know what to do. Should she talk to the girls? Should she talk to Josef? Should she just rip it up?
She knocked on the door to his study and decided to bite the bullet.
"Come in." He called. He turned around right away.
"Rory, what’s wrong? "
"Josef, have you heard about the state lottery?"
"No I live in a coffin. Of course I’ve heard about the lottery."
She started to cry. "I bought a ticket and I won. $100,000."
Josef sighed. "Have you claimed it yet?"
"No. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to draw any attention to you."
"I appreciate that. Rory, you can’t claim it while you’re working for me.
She was very disappointed but not surprised. "That’s what I thought."
"Do you have any family members who can claim it for you?"
"None that I trust not to run away with it." she said sadly "It’s just…..it’s a lot of money."
"Do you think it’s worth risking my secret?" Josef said angrily
"No! Never! I would never put you in danger! It's just I never thought I'd win.
Josef sighed. He shouldn’t yell at Rory. It’s easy to forget how much a hundred grand is to most people. "Sweetie there’s no one you can trust? "
"My closest friends are the other girls and they have the same problem. Are you going to rip it up?"
"Do you have another suggestion?"
"Actually I do. The woman that used to own the apartment building I lived in. She’s almost 80 and only has social security and the rents. It barely covers her expenses. I could tell her I bought the ticket for her."
"That’s acceptable. Will she believe it?"
"Yes. I always got her scratch off tickets for her birthday and Christmas, so she won’t doubt it at all."
"Are you really willing to give it the money away?"
"I don’t want it to go back to the state and I won’t put you at risk so I’d rather someone get it."
Josef smiled. "Rory, you’re not going to be out this money. When you retire I’ll have another $100,000 set aside for you."
"Josef you don’t have to do that!"
"Of course I do. I don’t punish loyalty Babe. You’ll have your winnings along with your normal retirement package."
"Do you want to have someone claim the ticket then? Rory asked. That way you wouldn’t be out the money."
"No. It’s your prize you get to decide who should have it."
"Josef that’s so generous. I don’t know how to thank you. I think you should take it and get your money back."
Josef laughed. "Rory, you were willing to let me tear it up to keep my secret. Believe me that kind of loyalty doesn't have a dollar amount. Go make a little old lady’s day."
Rory was bouncing up and down she was so excited. She hugged and kissed him and told him he was the most wonderful vampire that ever lived.
Josef knew the truth. He had the best freshies in the world.

What a great take on things! That kind of money is a lot, but a freshie's loyalty is definitely worth more than a hundred grand, and Josef knows it. And Rory has a good heart. Do you have a doll for her? (Just kidding).

Cute! What's a hundred grand to Josef? A lot less than it is to a little old lady. Wonderful.

Emma - Josef is a generous sort. That's why I love him.
Aggie - I thought the money should go to someone who really needed it. You wouldn't want it to go to waste.
francis - Josef's girls are devoted. By the way
I do have a Rory doll. She's the one in the pink hair.

Oh, I love the Rory doll!!
She's a darling--and Josef will make sure she's not sorry she made that woman's LIFE by giving her the ticket.
This is a very sweet story, on many levels.

like everyone else, I think this is just such a sweet story. The kernel of truth here is that you really cannot buy love or loyalty.

Cassy, what a nice commentary on the value of loyalty. I just knew Josef would reward her for doing the right thing.
