Anniversaries Conclusion Jo/Be PG-13

Beth was quiet on the drive over to Mick’s.

“Are you up to this?” Josef asked.

“Yes. I just don’t know what to expect.”

“What you can expect is a very angry vampire. He may attack you, me, both of us.”

“Mick would never hurt me.”

“Don’t be sure.”

They entered Mick’s apartment where he was sitting on the floor in despair.

Mick growled “Get out! Both of you! Out!” He shoved Josef up against a wall.

"We need to talk Buddy."

“I’m not your buddy. You stole her from me.” Mick grabbed a stake and aimed for Josef’s heart.

Josef knocked it out of his hand and had him pinned to the ground in two seconds flat.

“Don’t ever threaten me.” Josef growled. “I know you’re angry but you are going to listen to me.”

“How could you take advantage of her like that?”

“No one took advantage of me Mick.” Beth yelled. “It was my choice.”

“Are you sure you want to marry him?”

Josef sighed. “Beth, tell him.”

“We are married Mick.” “We got married a little over a year ago.”

You said…..

Beth was on the verge of tears. “I lied.” “I didn’t think you could handle it.”

Now Mick was getting angry. “How could the two of you betray me like that?”

“Betray you? “ Beth yelled. “You left me for Coraline.”

“I left you to save her, not to be with her.”

“How was I supposed to know that?” Beth cried. “ We never heard from you. I thought you were dead.”

Josef stepped in front of Beth. “Mick, I used all my contacts. I couldn’t get a good lead on where they were holding you.” “ I knew if Lance had kept you for more than a few months someone would have heard about it so after a while I presumed you were dead.” “I never thought Cynthia would work with the Duvalls after they kidnapped Coraline.” “ I did do a cursory check on her early on but I didn’t continue to have her watched.”

“Maybe you didn’t want to find me.” Mick said angrily.

“Mick it was two years before I turned Beth.” “Two years that I did follow any number of wild goose chases.” “To be honest, I did hear rumors that Coraline was dead and I never imagined they would keep you alive even for entertainment after that.”

“You never told me that.” Beth said.

Josef sighed. “Because they were rumors Beth.” “Mick I didn’t understand the level of hatred Cynthia had for you.” “You told me she loved Coraline not that she considered you a rival.” “When I saw Cynthia last month…..”

“Last month???” The pieces were starting to come together for Mick.

“Yes, when I introduced Beth to European Vampire Society.” “ I sensed something from her and maybe I should have looked into it but then you contacted me a few weeks later.”

“She released me so I could lose everything.” Mick said despondently

Josef risked touching Mick on the shoulder. “Don’t let her.”

“I already have.”

Josef shook his head. “Mick you haven’t lost me unless you want to sever ties.” “I won’t speak for Beth but maybe the two of you can be friends one day.”

“Friends?” Mick said weakly.

“We started out as friends.” Beth said quietly. “I’m willing to try if you are.” “I’m also willing to help you get revenge on Cynthia.”

“Absolutely.” Josef said. “We can start searching for her immediately.”

“I can handle that myself.”

“Mick, going it alone didn’t turn out so well the last time.” “Let us help you.”

“Please.” Beth whispered.

“I need time to think.” “A lot has happened and I need to process it.”

Josef nodded. . “But Mick if you decide you don’t want our help contact Guillermo and Logan.” “Don’t be the Lone Vampire again.”

Mick realized he had to come to grips with what happened in his absence. Life or unlife moves on. Did he have conflicted feelings about Coraline? Was losing Beth at least partially his fault?

“I promise you both that much.” “I just don’t know if I can stand to be around the two of you right now.”

Tears were streaming down Beth’s face. “I hope someday we can sit down and share a freshie and remember the good times. “ Eternity is a long time.”

“I hope so Beth.” Mick said quietly. “I hope so.”

A sad story, but true to what the characters are and what could have happened. I really think Cynthia could do something like that, letting Mick go just to destroy him. And she almost succeeded, maybe she did. It will take some time, but vampires have time. It's sad for me because I love MickBeth, but it could happen.
You're getting really good at the tense emotional dialogue thingie.

Thanks Cassy! I thought the ending was good. Realistic.
Mick can suck it up and realize he caused the mess he has now, nobody else. Then he'll be able to be friends with Beth and Josef.
If he'll let them help him now, it would speed the whole process along.
They never stopped caring about him, but he was dead, so they had to move on.
How can Josef waiting two years before he Turned her (Turner, (cough) not be considered reasonable?


..and Beth, ..'we can share a Freshie' ..Ahhh... priceless!

OZ - Glad you liked it. I almost always have to have some humor in my stories so I had to give Beth the freshie line. This story was an experiment for me and I'm glad it turned out okay.

A very sad story, but an ending with just a hint of hope.
Thanks for giving us (and them) that much. I feared Mick couldn't stand it. And he is even beginning to see his mistakes that more or less lead to the situation he found himself in now.

draco - My stories tend to be much lighter so I had to leave it as hopeful as possible while holding true to the circumstances.

tucutecats - When I started this I wanted to see if I could do a Jo/Be story with Mick still be alive. I had to have him presumed dead at the start but I'm happy with how it came out.
