for Red and Kalua... and about the Italian title! Oh geez... I hope it doesn't turn people in Italy off from watching the film... but seeing Alex on movie posters can only help the movie get more viewers, so... maybe it'll work out.
About the title, my theory is that they were thinking "how can we make people understand that this is a funny movie? Let's give it a REALLY stupid title, that will be a clear sign!".
Other examples:
Reality bites - Young, pretty and unemployed
Home alone - Mummy, I missed the plane!
Runaway bride - If you run, I'll marry you
Knocked up - Very pregnant
Untolerable Cruelty - First I marry you, than I ruin you
and I could go on and on, so you can see, we are quite used to this. There is even a Facebook group against badly translated titles (actually, the name of the group is quite stronger).
Back to topic.
In addition to the silly title, late May is not a good time for a movie release in Italy, our season is almost over and if the weather is good people begin to go out of town for the week-end and don't go to the cinema.
I really hope this movie will be a hit in spite of everything, because Alex is still mostly unknown here and TBUP could be his occasion to be discovered. JLo, on the other hand, is very popular, so it could work.

So kalua, that means "nice to meet you, I'm a little bit pregnant"?....hmm, I don't think learning that bit of Italian is going to come in handy for me one day, thank God.
Do Italians not understand the concept of a back up plan?

Oh we do understand! It's just the people distributing movies thinking that we are all stupid.
The title could have been "Il piano B" or "Il piano di riserva", but they probably thought the simple translation would have been too generic, not giving immediately the idea of a comedy. So they went for the silly title.
(Oh, and I was channeling Red Forman there... from "That 70s Show," who would probably love to 'share' something with said movie suits - his foot, up their a$$ )

Thanks for the explanation kalua. So, they seriously think "nice to meet you, I'm a bit pregnant" is better than "the back up plan"? Weird. Although I have to admit I can't come up with a better title that implies it's a funny film (but I'm tired, and that's my excuse ).
One thing that sailed over my head until a few days ago is that BUP being a CBS film, might actually get some promotion during CBS primetime shows. The light bulb went on over my head after seeing numerous ads for 'Extraordinary Measures' (the first CBS film that will be in theaters 1/22/10)) with Harrison Ford and Brenden Frazier during the last week or so on CBS. So maybe in late March, early April, we should start seeing ads for BUP as well. We can only hope.

Thanks to the talented and generous Phoenix for my beautiful banner!
The January/February Watch magazine has Harrison Ford on the cover and a 5-6 page article inside. It's a pretty detailed interview with some pictures. Under the heading "A Studio Is Born", they have one paragraph each on TBUP, Beastly, and Faster, the next three offerings. that the next issue has some Alex, not just JLo, for me to sigh over. Pretty please, CBS.
