cassysj wrote:Well I have to say I liked the movie more than I thought, the critics had me worried, I thought it was another J-Lo Gigli.

I enjoyed seeing Alex and found his character very likable and I loved seeing him shirtless. I didn't like the animated opening credits, but they did get the point across that Zoe wanted a baby.

The theater was very empty only ten people. Nine women and one man. He seemed to be enjoying J-Lo.

It was cute. I tend to like the rom-com formula and it fit the bill. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Did they ever tell us the names of the twins? I'm pretty sure one was Penny but I can't remember if they mentioned the other one.
I didn't even catch Penny (I couldn't quite hear what Zoe was saying), but boy, that's appropriate. Wonder what the other one was.

I checked the cast list for the movie and they don't list the twins' names.

I have to leave town tomorrow and I have so much to do. I was going to wait until I got back to go see BUP but hearing everyone talk about how good Alex looks on the big screen I decided I better take the 2hrs and just go. I'm so glad I did. I'm the first to admit that when it comes to movies I'm easy. I'll grin and bear it and find something to like in most movies. I didn't have to do that with this one. I loved every minute from the start to finish. It made me laugh and only made me cry a little bit. What a great movie.

There was about 20 people in the theater but it was the first showing on a sat morning which is when I always go because there is never hardly a soul there. It's what I've done for years and years so I didn't really expect many people.

I thought the chemistry between Alex and JLo was very good. It's the one thing that will make or break a movie like this and they had it in spades.

I always loved Alex in ML but I have to say I think his acting has improved. He was good in ML but he really shinned as Stan. And OMG is he gorgeous on the big screen. Loved the part at the end where he was reading to the babies. So cute.

All the supporting actors were very fun and added a nice snap to the movie.

I'll most definitely buy this when it comes out on DVD. I think I liked this more than anything he's done except for ML but that's mostly because of Mick as a character.

Now I'm going to still go when I get back to town next week but I'm really glad that I went today. :hearts:

Okay, just back a bit ago from BUP. Well. It was cute, and Alex was adorable.

I have to say that I know maybe a little more about cheesemaking than perhaps the average person...so I actually enjoyed it when they talked about that. (Yes, once upon a time I had other hobbies than writing ML fic.) And seriously, I'd think Stan explaining anything would hardly be boring...

I was very disappointed that a couple of clips didn't make it into the final version. I mean, seriously, they decided to cut out him telling her he loved her for the first time??? No wonder she was suspicious of him! He never told her how he felt....

The last romcom I went to, I think was "The Proposal" which I disliked intensely. BUP was much better than that...

Lucky

I forgot about that. Also when he showed up at her apartment for the first time after she told him she was pregnant did they cut out the part where he held up the baby book and the Gray's Papaya.

Side note about Gray's Papaya - big rivalry here in NYC between Nathan's and Gray's Papaya. I'm a Nathan's girl and I think I've only had Gray's Papaya twice in my life. Once ironically was last Tuesday, I was going to the Apple store and a friend was going to show me the Ipad. I could only afford and Ipod touch but Grey's Papaya was right near the store. They are pretty good and Papaya drink with hot dogs is interesting.

Grrr. At the Movies started late and they didn't show the review of the Back Up Plan. They recapped at the end that Michael Philps said See It. Does anyone know when At The Movies reviews go on their site.

From HuffPo: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lauren-j- ... 50549.html

A couple of sections that particularly caught my eye  :
I'll admit to having never seen Alex O'Loughlin's previous work, but he does very well at not appearing as a bumbling lovestruck idiot and instead pursues Lopez's character in an adorable (read: not creepy) way. His romantic gestures (disturbed by things like red wine spills and fire) are heart-flutter worthy and, in my eyes, instantly transform the unknown into a new competitor for the big screen rom-com leads.
Since viewing the movie last night, alongside more than a hundred other women all there for a girl's night out, I've read several reviews of the film. I was surprised to find such bad press. Some pieces debated that the film deters women from believing they can raise children on their own. My reaction: this movie wasn't meant to be a thesis topic for 2010 feminism movements. It's a romantic comedy, there's a formula: lead actress has to end up with lead actor, and we're just there for the ride. It's how the screenwriter (Kate Angelo) tells the story, and the how the actors portray it that should really garner our interest. And in my simple movie viewer eye, The Back-Up Plan was both romantic and comedic in a way that left me satisfied. As for Lopez, this newest wave into her sea of romantic comedies may very well be her best yet.

***steam coming out of fleur's ears***

Is this the same Michael Phillip's who gave BUP only 1 1/2 stars in this week's Tribune????? Now he says: See It??? WTF happened between Friday and today, did he friggin buy a clue or something? Nothing in his review suggested that anyone should See It. As I stated pages ago, it wasn't a horrible review, more a thesis on JLo and her career and acting choices. Oh, and he did say that the characters of Stan and Zoe were narcisstic divas. Yeah, that just screams See It to me.

Idiot.

And thank you baby Jesus in the manger (shout-out to PGal) for that second quote in red's post. FINALLY, someone with a clue. Let me guess, was it a woman who wrote that? Probably.

How many of us even entertained one smidgen of thought about this being a feminist piece?? That's what I thought. Zip. Zero. None.

I think these critics just like writing big fancy words, and trying to turn what they do into some sort of indecipherable art form that us mere humans don't understand. Just tell me if the blasted movie is any good or not, and give me concise reasons why it didn't work for you.

I need a drink.
