He did have an idealised view of Beth, of being her guardian angel, and this, like so any other things, affected the way he interacted with her, including in this episode.

Thanks Red. It only took me 8 months to read the above reply and you answered it well. I also love Mick for all those reasons. Mick is, to me, the best character to ever hit the TV screen. And Alex was the best actor for the job. Alex KNEW who Mick was, inside and out. I know why he took the loss so hard.
