Jason on Lie to Me - "Beat the Devil"

Okay, here's my thing I hinted at earlier...not a huge spoiler, but a delightful aside.

Spoiler:

When I talked to Jason in Houston, and he told me about filming this episode, I mentioned how much we'd all enjoyed seeing him in CSI, but we were almost disappointed that he wasn't the "bad guy," as he is so great at the intense interrogation/confession scenes. He gave me that adorable impish grin of his and said: "You are going to love 'Lie to Me.' "

Obviously, he was telling the absolute truth!

Well, I don't know that I'd call it an EVIL gleam...but he did look pretty pleased with himself. As well he should.

Jason was amazing - they mentioned echoes of Bundy and that was definitely the vibe. For someone who only raised his voice once, who only had one moment of losing control (when he went for Helen), he scared the bejeezus out of me.

I do SO love Tim Roth - I think he's amazing and this was a very good episode for him too. For once, I'm delighted to see an English actor playing an English character. TR can do the accent and has been utterly convincing playing American roles but there's something chippy about Lightman that fits perfectly with him being English.

Brilliant.

And Howard Hesseman was fabulous too!

Wow. Well, this was worth the wait. There's something about a guy who is over the top adorable... being so way down deep chillingly creepy. Jason was amazing! I found myself wanting him to get away... so he could return in a later episode.

You know, there were times when Josef was scarey. However, Martin was (deliciously) evil!

The scene where Martin is with the woman (forgot her name - she works with Lightman) at her car, outside the coffee shop, was the scene in the promo I saw. Thrillingly (for me) terrifyingly (for her) chilling.

Absolutely brilliant performance by Jason. I just don't get it. Why isn't this man on my TV every week?!

And to digress just a moment. Had they EVER given Josef a chance to do something truly awful awful awful, for whatever reason Josef woulda had to do that thing, oh I think Jason coulda made that cuddly vampire someone to haunt us in our dreams that night. His threat over the phone, when we first meet him in NSTAV, was no idle threat. I think Mick knew that.

I am soooooo bummed that he did not get the opportunity to show us THAT.

ETA: I agree that TR did a wonderful job, Red, but he always does. He's really good in this show. I watched this all year... it got moved around a lot and nearly cancelled, but it's an entertaining show, largely because of Tim Roth... and his fab accent.

susie, it's interesting that you mention him returning in another episode. As we were waiting all those weeks for this episode to air, my biggest wish (aside from June 7 coming sooner) was that his character wouldn't die. I was thinking that, innocent or guilty, if he didn't die they could always figure out a way to bring him back.

Do you think there are possibilities there for him to reprise this role? Maybe they study him in prison? Or he escapes?

Maybe I'm being too greedy, but I just want to see more of the dynamic between Martin and Lightman.


grace, I think the big difference between Josef and Martin, for me anyway, is that Josef is a vampire. I expect --and accept -- certain things from him. Even though Jason could have absolutely sold it, I just don't think I ever would have been as chilled to the bone with Josef letting lose as I was seeing this icy control from a human.
