I own nothing. Moonlight belongs to someone else, and whoever they are they have a true jewel of a TV show. Don't earn any money for writing this, just the experience and a lot of enjoyment.
I would like to credit the wonderful, brilliant LionsonLeashes for her encouragement, support and keen insight in advising me how to fix problems. She and the fabulous Lilly handheld me through the posting process. They are amazing, generous, and wonderful people!
This one was shorter than he other entry, but I still passed the 500 word maximum. Sorry.
Killing Time
You may think that as big, bad vampires, the universe has us at the top of the food chain. How did Lola put it--‘We move through the night so powerful nothing can touch us’ but the truth is that from time to time you know two things: (1) the universe has a sense of humor, and (2) you are the butt of the joke.
“Now, let me get this straight,” said Beth. “You talk to Josef Kostan about our private conversations? What I share with you in confidence you air for all the world to know?”
Oh, man. Some days you know that you should never have gotten out of the freezer…
“You never said it was in confidence…”
I knew it was another mistake when the words left my lips. My next thought was to be glad that I was a vampire, because if I hadn’t already been turned, I’d be a dead man. Oh, wait. Beth knows about stakes and silver. Shit…
Beth has this little artery near the surface of her skin on her forehead. No one would notice ordinarily (well, a vampire would notice) but when she gets angry or irritated, I can gauge just bad it is by this little artery. Right now, on a scale of one to five, she was about at a seven.
“I talk to Josef because he is my sounding board. I can be unreasonable sometimes and I realize that. By talking through the issue, I can see it more clearly.” Jackpot. She is down to a four.
“Come on,” I coaxed, turning on every bit of charm I could muster up, “Don’t tell me you don’t talk to Simone.”
Down to a three. I’m on a roll here.
That’s true,” she said. “OK. I overreacted. I’m sorry. I guess the whole issue is that you talked to Josef. He is such a…”
“Hedonistic asshole?" I offered helpfully.
“Yeah.” she nodded. “So what did the hedonistic asshole say?”
Ho boy. This is not going to be good.
I started mentally editing the conversation as quickly as my enhanced mental processing abilities would allow, “ He says that you have saved our assets on numerous occasions and that he’s surprised by your abilities to handle our world.”
“Hmm.” Beth replied, not convinced, “Score one for the hedonistic asshole.”
“But he thinks forever is a long time and people change.”
“Who does he think is going to change, You or me?”
“He didn’t say, but I think he meant both of us will change. Events and the passage of time makes us different people--humans and vampires. The boy who went off to fight the Nazis could never envision what he would see, and how his world would change. I have been a monster and moved past that stage to something else. You were not the same person when you were four and wanted different things at various stages in your life. Vampires are suspended in an unchanging state and yet we change, too.”
“How…surprisingly perceptive. Actually, I’m shocked--Josef Kostan the fount of wisdom and relationship expert. Who knew?”
“He is over four hundred.”
Beth looked thoughtful for a moment.
“You will tell me pretty much anything to calm me down. This is all bullshit, right?”
“Yeeaah. I’m pretty much killing time.”
