The detective and his girlfriend don't seem to have that healthy a relationship either.

Exactly... thru much of the movie, the sense is, weird as it is, Michael and girly actually have some love going on... cop and the tramp, not so much...

I think the thing that struck me about the cop's relationship is that it's so sordid. Neither of them seem to find any kind of contentment with each other. We never see them do anything except have sex and fight.
