The Bad Dream


“Momma! Momma!”

“Shh, I’m here, sweetheart. It’s okay. You were having a bad dream, that’s all. It’s over now.”

“It was awful! I dreamed about the scary lady again. The one that took me. There was all this growling and fighting and a fire and…”

“There, there, honey. Here’s a tissue. Remember when Mr. St. John told us the scary lady can’t hurt anyone again? You don’t have to worry about her anymore. Let’s try to think about something nice so you’ll have a good dream. Now slide back down under the covers.”

“Mr. St. John was nice, Momma.”

“Yes he was. Very nice.”

“He fought with the scary lady, but when it was over, somehow I wasn’t afraid of him. He took me home.”

“Yes he did, and I’m so grateful to him. He was an angel sent from heaven to save you and bring you back to me. Oh dear, now I need a tissue.”

“Is he my angel, Momma?”

“Yes Beth, I think he is.”

“Will he always be my angel? What if someone else tries to take me away from you? Will he save me again?”

“Now, now, let’s not worry about that happening. We need happy thoughts!”

“But what if somebody does? Will he be my angel then?”

“I hope so, sweetie. I certainly hope so. I know, let’s pretend that he is your guardian angel, always there to watch over you.”

“That would make me happy. My very own angel. My own… guardian… angel…”

Aww, you've got me sniffling again. I just love your heart-tugging stories, MLC!! And this one is so believable. Despite her mother's comfort, Beth needed a guardian to believe in, a champion who would always protect her. And lucky girl--she had one.

Somewhere in her past, those words were planted in her head and they fit so perfectly!

Yes Jenna, I see that this could be how Beth came to call Mick her guardian angel. Over time she forgot his name and his face (how much do you remember from when you were four? ) but she clung onto her mother's words that she had guardian angel watching over her and keeping her safe.

Lovely story, MLC. This must have been somehow the way it all fitted into Beth's little head after her kidnapping, the scary lady and -luckily for her and for us- her Guardian Angel.

Your story reminded me of one question I used to have during the series and while reading fanfic. What exactly did Beth's mom learn about the scary lady? How much did Mick tell her or the police? How did he explain what happened to the woman who took her kid, to reassure her nothing was going to happen again....

Poor little Beth! It's amazing that she turned out to be our intrepid reporter after that early trauma. She must have internalized the idea of her own special Guardian Angel. With his protection, she could be daring.

Oh yes Beth that is the thought to always have sweet girl and what a wonderful thought. A beautiful moment MLC between mother and daughter after all they had been through, it's wonderful to have that connection.
