Mick had been listening to his cousin for three hours explain how time travel worked. He told him he was overwhelmed and needed to get some sleep. Emmett tried to get him to eat something first but he refused.

After he was sure Emmett had fallen asleep he made a collect call to Josef.

“Mick, where are you?”

“I need a doctor at 1955 Riverside Drive, Hill Valley, California”

“Doctor or Cleaner?”

“Doctor. I need a human disoriented and unconscious for 24-48 hours.

I’ll have the doctor there in an hour. Can you contain her until then?”

“Him, and yes he’s asleep.

“Him? How much does he weigh? The medication needs to be measured for height and weight.

Approximately 5’10, 170 pounds, 65 years of age.

Josef laughed. “I didn’t know you had Daddy issues.”

“Josef, now is not the time. I’m coming back home after I make sure he’s all right. It’s important that he isn’t hurt or damaged.

“Mick, who is this guy?”

“He’s from my life before….but he can change my future.”

Mick let the doctor in and he gave Emmett a shot. “He’ll sleep through the weekend.” Dr. Johnson said.

“Is he going to be all right?”

The doctor laughed “Like you care. He’ll be fine just a little confused. I’ll send Mr. Kostan my bill.

Mick drove back to Josef’s mansion and arrived about an hour before sunrise.

“What the hell is going on Mick?’

“Josef, can you get your hands on plutonium?”

“Why? Do you want to nuke someone?’

Yes or no.”

“Mick that isn’t a yes or no question. I need to know the reason.”

Mick told him about his cousin and how rational he seemed when he discussed time travel. Josef thought his friend was having a nervous breakdown.

“Did you tell him you were a vampire?” Josef said quietly

“No. I said I got stuck in the Bermuda Triangle.

Josef laughed. “That’s a good one. I’ll have to remember that. Mick, if he’s so naïve he believes that what makes you think he could actually build a time machine.”

“Josef, he’s brilliant. He just needs plutonium to test it. I could go back in time. What if I never married Coraline?

“Excellent. Then you never would have met me and we wouldn’t be having this conversation about plutonium.”

Mick sighed. “Josef isn’t there anything in your life you would have done differently?”

“I don’t look back Mick.” He said sharply.

“I know but if you could travel back in time and change one thing, what would you do?

Josef was quiet for over a minute. “I would have taken a train out of Penn Station instead of Grand Central.


Mick paused. “I don’t know what that means but you can do it. If the time machine works, I’ll be an old man, Beth will never be kidnapped and you can change whatever you think needs changing.”

Josef had a faraway look Mick had never seen before. “Mick, I think you're crazy. I’ll check him out and if I’m convinced I know people who can get the supplies he needs but you have got to stay put. Take the East Wing, I'll send Lana up to feed you.

"I don't eat fresh anymore."

"Mick, I think you're having delusions from dead blood. Prove me wrong."

"All right but not Lana, send me Rory."

"She has pink hair this week."

"Doesn't matter. Lana hates me, Rory can at least stomach me."

"Fine. I'll send Rory, what is your cousin's name?

Mick hesitated.

"I have the address Mick, don't annoy me by making me work for it."

"Emmett Brown."

Oh. Josef will take care of it all. Now we know where Emmett got the plutonium, huh? But will they really travel or not? Can't wait to find out.

The Emmitt Brown I remember from the BTTF movies (who you capture brilliantly, by the way) looked, sounded and acted like the elevator didn't reach the top floors, but you can't argue with results. In his long life, I'll bet Josef has met his share of brilliant people and will recognize the signs.

If he convinces Josef Kostan, we may see a fleet of Delorians with flex capacitors with a 'Kostan Industries' logo? (Did we ever see a Kostan Industries logo?)

Lots of bad stuff could be fixed, but lots of good could be undone...

like Mick and Beth! Come on, Mick! You and Emmitt Brown are related. Figure it out!

Wow. So Mick wants to go back in time so there will be no marriage to Corline, hence no turning, hence no reason to rescue 4 year old Beth, hence no reason to kill his wife. I can see the attraction for him. Since Beth is still a child here, there is no "Mick and Beth" to give up.

Wow...what's Josef going to do about the plutonium?

Ohhh... the one thing Josef would change...

I find it fascinating that both Josef and Mick contemplate making changes that would remove their great loves (in Mick's case, it's Coraline at this point) from their lives. And, of course, there's the side-effect of Mick not looking 30 when Beth walks through that fountain. (Of course, Mick wouldn't have had any reason to be there anyway... assuming, even, that if Beth hadn't been kidnapped as a child she would have ended up at BuzzWire!) Great Scott! See what happens when you start messing with time travel?!?

If Mick got Josef involved so that Emmett would be able to acquire the plutonium, that makes a lot of sense to me. How else could he get it?

Lucy - It would be a huge sacrifice for Mick but not as much for 1985 Mick as 2007

jen - So much trouble though in the BTTF universe. Hard to mess with the past

MLC - Mick is so depressed it makes perfect sense since he doesn't know the future.

Marigold - It is sad to think that we would change Sarah but it's not real to him

Alle - Josef can get anything.

I have to keep reminding myself that this is 1985, and Beth is just a little kid. Of course, to us, it's terrible to think that Mick would never meet and fall for adult Beth... but she doesn't exist yet in this universe. And Mick is devastated because he murdered his wife, and he would give anything to have never been turned. And Josef would be willing to have never met his Sarah in order to save her from getting stuck in Limbo, but Mick doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

This is quite a tangle you've put our heroes into!
