I'm obviously a more practical person than a lot of other ML fans. Obviously, I loved the show and was gutted when it was cancelled. More than anything it was the injustice of the sudden death, I think; we had been so sure that it was going to come back. But of course time goes by and we heal. Some fans have healed quicker than others it's true, but it didn't take me too long to realise that it's just a part of life.
Alex really did love the character of Mick, and there's no doubt he was distraught after the show was cancelled, but we have to remember that for him, it's just a job that he lost. It was his first lead role and he virtually carried the show. What a kick in the face to have it said to you that you aren't worth the chance of a second season - that your ninety hour weeks weren't enough - that your fanbase wasn't big enough or young enough to keep your job alive. That's how he must have felt when he was told the show was gone. I'm not surprised he went off to lick his wounds.
But of course he got over it; he comes back and CBS says "you know what - you ARE worth it. It was all the other crap we didn't like, do you want to take another chance?" Of course he jumps at it. He's very focused on the future and suddenly the world is his oyster again. Life goes on.
But for the fans of his character, and for fans of the show it's much harder. A lot of us didn't have that kind of closure and many fans still want their Moonlight fix. It has puzzled me a bit why so many people are bemoaning the fact that the re-runs are coming to an end. I read the posts where people complain about the extra ad breaks, the precious seconds of show deleted by Sci-Fi, and I wonder why they just don't watch their DVDs. But of course, it isn't about the
show, it's about the
event. Everyone still wants to be a part of the community that created the ML fanverse. The show started it, but WE continued it. And that is splintering off to new shows, following the actors on to new projects, finding new thrills eslewhere. It's why people want to find a way to bring it back - so the community can continue.
The funny thing is that the community is still here. We always have been. Just waiting. And now the wait is coming to an end and there is finally something new to get excited about. I know it's not the same show; I know there are some of us who won't feel the same about these new shows coming up for Alex and Jason, and I know there are people who don't care about anything but the ML characters and story. Fortunately most people are happy enough to stay on for the new adventure, but it certainly won't be the same, but it could be just as good.
As I said earlier - I am a very practical person. I was so thankful that we got a kind of happy ending for ML because a lot of cancelled shows don't. I just finished watching Veronica Mars and I was SO disappointed with the fizzled out end of that show. I read recently where Rob Thomas the show's creator, said he didn't want to make it easy for the network to cancel the show, so he deliberately left the story unresolved. Selfish bastard! At least we got that much with ML. I'm also someone who's loved a show and watched it limp along for three seasons, each one worse than before, until I lost all interest and didn't even bother to watch the last five or six episodes. I'm so glad that never happened with ML because it could very well have happened. We saw the conflict over the different ideas in telling the story and we also saw a different direction in the last four episodes; if nobody else remembers the fallout from some fans after FtP and Click, then I sure do. There's no guarantee that ML would have improved in ratings or style at all and we could have been left with a situation like VM - no closure.
I know this isn't relevant for those of you who mourn for ML, but it's just the viewpoint of someone who
doesn't mourn for it at all. I'm very happy with what we got and would have loved more; but I can accept that it may have been the right thing to cancel the show too. Everything happens for a reason and there was something wrong with ML behind the scenes and it probably wouldn't have become bigger or better with time. It may have fizzled too and if the fanbase trickled away who's to say that CBS would have offered Alex a new deal eventually?
I think all this promotion for CM, TR and TBUP is a direct consequence of ML anyway like Mary said. It didn't happen with ML because ML was the catalyst for what's happening now. One day we will all say that Moonlight started it all for Alex and it will be true. Like Veronica Mars was the stepping off point for Jason, ML will be seen as Alex's big break. And we are directly responsible for that because without this vocal, obstinate fanbase CBS wouldn't be aware just how special Alex is.
It's all ahead of us; the joy, the fear, the expectation, the constant waiting for more. It WILL be just like with ML, it just won't BE Moonlight. That's okay. I can live with that.
oh God, I just saw the length of this post. I'm SO SORRY !
