He’d thought himself wise and world-weary, detached from emotion, the year it was painted. He was younger now.

Beautifully crafted, Lucky. I felt like I was sitting in the backseat of the Ferrari (I wish!) and was a fly on the wall of the museum..you have an uncanny knack of making your characters and situations so realistic that you can touch them...brava! :clapping:

A fantastic story, Lucky! Josef certainly knows the way to her heart, and it's a step in the right direction for the two of them.

I loved the painting reference. I can certainly imagine Josef in period clothing....

Great job! :yahoo:

Thank you, everyone for the lovely comments.

fishy, the Rilke quotation seemed especially apropos.

Yes, after putting the poor girl through so much grief and angst (not to mention what all this is doing to Josef's peace of mind...), Lilly suggested to me that Josef should do something nice for Freshie Lucky. And given her interests, this suggested itself to me. I have to admit that having been to the Huntington once for a "behind the scenes" tour...which did NOT include handling anything so precious, really helped with inspiration for this one.

I was a little worried that something so "bookish" might not appeal to everyone, so the positive comments are especially nice to hear.

It may be a little while before the next story in the sequence appears, but be patient! I have plans for them... :evillaugh:

Thanks again to everyone who read, and everyone who commented!

You brought out the special feel of the Huntington Library and Gardens. I've been there twice. The Japanese bridge is used in many shows - I've seen it in Charmed and elsewhere. Josef really wants Lucky to be comfortable with him again and to know how much he cares for her feelings. With how much she knows and her love for the past, when she's ready to leave Josef - and the time must come - it would be good for her to be a curator there herself, with a better attitude than the one who brought them to the picture. Sweet chapter.

Thanks, Penina. And I think Josef really wants to be comfortable with her, as well. He is--very slowly--coming to realize that he wants her to be happy, as it makes him happy as well.

You know, given the context of the last couple of Lucky stories, a book/painting viewing wasn't even on the list of possibilities for the "Private Viewing" in question. I was thinking more along the lines to Safe Word :giggle: , but this was nice. And I LOVE the closing line. One is never so experienced as they are at 18. Once they get out in the world they accept their amateur status.

Thanks, Lucky. I feel better now. Much better. :happysigh:

How very thoughtful of Josef. :hearts: Freshie Lucky has been through a lot in the past little while (so has Josef, for that matter). An outing like this was just the thing to cheer them up.

It was great to see Josef and Freshie Lucky interacting similarly to how they used to. They can't undo all that has happened recently, but they can try to move forward.

I loved reading about the ancient volumes. What an amazing experience for Freshie Lucky! And the idea of a Rembrandt portrait of Josef... wow! :melts:

Lucky

You highlight a wonderful undercurrent of our beloved vampires here, that from their exposure to history, their being history, they both mingle with and can gently shape its course as it unfolds.

Lucky is...very Lucky here. What a privilege and one she clearly appreciates.

Thank you!

Jenna
