Three Rivers - news, links, discussion - part 6

Ok so i've worked out I'm the ONLY one who doesn't like the jacket.

You know, coco, it's not the jacket I don't like, but there's something about the way he's sitting on that stool, or his posture, or something. Not crazy about the picture.

But the close-up is fantastic.

Jacket's good, though. It's a new color scheme, people. Guess we'll just have to get used to it.

OK I'll be honest (please don't throw tomatoes), but I don't like either of the photos. Compared to the recent ones we have been getting from TBUP, these ones just don't do it for me, although the close-up is nice.

If I didn't know it was Alex in the first picture I wouldn't have given the guy a second look - I think there is something wrong with his hair - it kind of looks like a helmet! Sorry - I have every faith the real-life talking -walking version will be much better.

Getting away for a minute from the jacket and scrubs discussion, I sent an email to Matt Roush at TVGuide magazine last night commenting that I was surprised about his part in the panel discussion on Three Rivers. I am quoting from the blog someone posted a few pages ago:

"Bianco: I may not expect excitement all the time from CBS, but I expect solid competence. I think The Good Wife is a solidly competent show. And Three Rivers is shoddy and incompetent. It's also as if they want to punish the Moonlight fans. They're going to de-sex [Alex O'Loughlin] as much as they possibly can. Put him in a bad haircut, in badly fitting clothes, and make him just come across as a schlump and a lout and say, “There, you thought he was a star? Well, we'll show you.”
Roush: Regardless of [O'Loughlin's] appeal, the idea of a show that is built around somebody having to die every week to fuel the storyline is a downer. They are fixing the show, recasting the show, but I'm not sure you can fix what we've seen of Three Rivers so far. It's the only part of their schedule that looks wobbly"

I told Matt I was a little surprised to hear he had said this when I thought he was a fan of Alex's and had been good to Moonight fans. While I recognize he probably won't write back to me (even though I told him I subscribed to TVGuide Magazine because of him) I asked him to please at least give the show a chance. If I do get a reply I will let you know. But so far the "buzz" for Three Rivers at the TV Critics Convention has not been good.

And while I want Moonlight back as much as anyone I know it isn't going to happen except for the remote possibility of a movie. But if Three Rivers fails, I would imagine the chance of a movie would go even dimmer.

Man, oh man! Side by side, the scrubs pics, old and new are like night and day. Though I did a double take when I first saw the former, I'm thinking, okay, this is a stylised, hyper-realistic take on doctors, with emphasis on the glossy, sexy. I grew to like it. The second pic, not so much. Prosaic. What a shame. Desexed and already defanged. I suspect CBS's hand in this.

As for the jacket pic- I don't think I can speak objectively. It's not Mick. Certainly not compelling. But perhaps that's expecting too much.

Of course it's not Mick - Mick was one of a kind and that will never be duplicated. As much as I miss my Mick, I can appreciate the beauty of Alex in another role as well - and I for one adore that pic of him in that jacket.

Moonlightsonata, it's a critic's job to be critical - and I wanna say that Rousch didn't care for Moonlight in the beginning, either. But he slowly came around and who knows? Maybe the pilot really sucked - there must have been flaws or else they wouldn't have re-done it.

I think this is the downside of too much information - but I'm waiting to see how the rest of CBS's viewing audience see Three Rivers before I dismiss it.

And - I'd be very careful about biting the hand that feeds Alex.

Of course it's not Mick - Mick was one of a kind and that will never be duplicated. As much as I miss my Mick, I can appreciate the beauty of Alex in another role as well - and I for one adore that pic of him in that jacket.

This had nothing to do with Alex in another role. I just don't find the new pix inspiring or compelling. I liked him hot in the old TR pic.

As for the bolded part: CBS has a big say in what comes on the air, as we all very well know. It would be naive to think otherwise. It was an observation, not a criticism. I don't have any old baggage when it comes to CBS- they're not worth trashing and never have been. But I'm not going to walk on eggshells either. If TR is fated to be a hit, it will be. What we post is not going to make a bit of difference.

Lafluffy, although I can't speak for Pgal, I took her statement about biting the hand that feeds Alex to be a reference to the dangers of chastising Matt Roush, who has been very supportive of Alex. I happen to agree with you that the current crop of promo pix don't do much for Alex. And I also find it unfortunate that CBS is putting the whole show squarely on Alex's shoulders in its promotion campaign. That's a big burden to put on our guy, especially when there's so much more to the show than the star. However, I'm reserving judgment on the show till it's actually on the air.

The deal is, critics criticize--often based on little or no information, it seems to me. My worry is that Three Rivers is getting negative buzz early, which is a damn shame. However, it's numbers that will make or break the show. I plan on boosting those numbers as much as I can at the beginning, by getting family and friends to tune in. After that, it's up to the writers, producers, cast and crew...and I hope very much that the show lives up to our hopes. But... we'll see when it's on! In the meantime, I'm hoping that TPTB in Three Rivers Land pay attention to the criticisms they hear, and tweak the show to have more personal appeal and make it less procedural. A show like this depends on viewers developing an affection and an interest in the cast. When 2/3 of the cast changes every week (the donors and the recipients), it's up to the main cast to keep our interest...so let's hope they do a good job of that.

That's why you're the writer--using all those perfect, pretty writerly words when all I would say is:

Listen to PGal.

In all seriousness, it is a critic's job to criticize--if there is re-casting, etc going on, that doesn't generally bode well. However, you can never underestimate the audience's appeal/reaction. Bob knows there is a ton of crap on television that I don't think is worth 2 seconds of my time, but a shi*tload of people tune in.

Whether his show succeeds or doesn't, it certainly won't affect me like ML's cancellation did--then again, I am being a hypocrite I suppose. Who's to say that I won't fall in love with 3 Rivers, too? Never anticipated in a million years how a little vampire show could have consumed me mind, body and soul.

I respect any and all opinions/viewpoints whether you are a board member here or a tv critic. (and let's face it, critics sometimes like to stir the pot----that's showbiz) However, on one count I will go to the mat for over and over again: Impossible to de-sex (if that refers to his allure and appeal) Alex. Ain't gonna happen.

As to the photos of him in the brown jacket, or the baggy scrubs, or the tight scrubs: whether you like the particular look or not, I tend to think we are all in agreement that he is a beautiful man.

For the record, I loooooooooove the shot of him in the jacket. (don't like the jacket as a clothing choice, but on him it looks good)

Well according to the reporters tweeting from the press conference, the tight scrubs are toast.

Also, apparently the set looks awesome and Alex is cute. Go figure.

Man, you are so right. I am telling you, no doctor wears form fitting scrubs like that, but da*n if he didn't wear them well. Then again, how many shows have we seen where the nurses are wearing tight fitting uniforms, and if it's a soap, high heels?

May the tight scrubs rest in peace.
