Totally agree. He has been a victim, but has chosen to take control back and chart his own course.

Ranger, I am so very sorry!!!!
You were kind enough to read this little piece and leave a nice note and I never acknowledged it. I just lost count and missed it. Please forgive the oversight.

I really like your idea of Mick undergoing an internal change.
Nicely done, Jenna!
Comparing Mick's relationship with these rules with the fit of clothing was a very creative idea.jen wrote:Casting off rules I once lived by, like old clothes I thought never really fit, I relished what my wife called 'freedom' only to learn that I still wanted to be the hero of the story. When Coraline kidhapped Beth and I saved her, I picked up those cast off rules and found that they fit far better than I remembered.
Nicely done, Jenna!

I can't believe I missed this the first time around.
What a different take on Mick, but one that is entirely plausible. I can see that Mick would have been affected by whomever Coraline kidnapped. If it had been a little boy, Mick still would have "killed" her to prevent her from turning a child, and he still would have discovered those "old clothes" fitting better. It just happened to be Beth.
And aren't we all glad it was?
Nice job, Jenna!

Thank you so much for reading and leaving the lovely comment!
I enjoyed writing this and particularly loved those lines myself. How many times have all of us once looked at things we must deal with for one reason or another as things that don't fit who we are only to discover later in life that they fit us far better than we knew at the time.

Totally glad it was Beth (and I'd venture to say that Mick is, too!) but if I read my Mick's correctly, the child Coraline kidnapped in that instant became for Mick the symbol of his lost humanity and all that had been victimized and he just couldn't be a part of that any more. Then came the years of watching over the child as she grew into a beautiful woman. I don't think Mick fell in love with Beth until they met--she was still that distant, unattainable symbol of all he thought he had lost until...she wasn't.
Thank you for reading and leaving your very kind comment!! Thank you!!!
