It finally hit me.
I got up this afternoon, raided the hidden fridge and drank some some blood (I’ll need to drop by the morgue later and get a new supply--my Beth calls it grocery shopping), then I went through the rest of my routine with a goofy grin on my face.
Me--emotional road kill on the highway of life (or unlife).
Beth Turner has been at the center of this change but as much as I love her, she wasn't the cause. She was there when I took my self determination back and still believes I was a victim of what Coraline forced on me. I let her think that, but it's not true. Not really. I never wanted to be a vampire--I'd long since assigned them to the realm of childhood myths but once Turned, I surrendered to the bloodlust and reveled in the absence of restrictions. Casting off rules I once lived by, like old clothes I thought never really fit, I relished what my wife called 'freedom' only to learn that I still wanted to be the hero of the story. When Coraline kidhapped Beth and I saved her, I picked up those cast off rules and found that they fit far better than I remembered.
As much as I adore Beth, I never chose a four year old child over Coraline. Beth was just there, silent witness to another polar shift in my life. She was an unknowing spectator to the instant I began to reinvent myself.
I’m still a vampire, but even though I may never get another tan; taste another strawberry; or wake to the dawn in a warm bed with pillows and blankets -- if I’m careful (and lucky), things may still work out for us. I'm starting to believe that vampires get a shot at ‘happily ever after’ after all.

Jen this is fantastic!!! I love the "emotional roadkill" line. Mick has come a long way, and it's less awkward if it came along not because of stalking 4 year old Beth. He found a purpose and freed himself from Coraline, that's what started it. And still, Beth is a very important part of him and thoughts of her go through this little story from start to finish.

Re: Mick (Short) Rating: G
very intriguing notion, this one...
I really like your MIck here, too. He's really stepping up to the plate, letting go of the angst and leaping into the future with a bit of hope. Wonderful.
sounds like what you're saying is that he was already ready to make the change and baby Beth was just there when it happened. I'm not sure I've ever read a fic with that concept before. It made me stop and think.jen wrote:As much as I adore my Beth, I never chose a four year old child over Coraline.

This is very nice, Jenna. I like Mick taking ownership of his own happiness.

Thank you so much for reading, and yes, I really think that Mick and Coraline had ongoing issues regarding the kidnapping of children and the like.
While Mick by his own admission participated in some horrors with Coraline, deep inside I think that something survived, and in time he regained the strength to reclaim it.
Thank you!

Thanks for reading and commenting.
I totally agree. We all have a different take on the things that we see and enjoy, but ultimately I think this is one of the great themes of Moonlight--Mick taking responsibility for his happiness, and choosing not to be a victim of bad things himself, and to protect others when he can.
Thank you!

I think this is a good insight into the change we saw in Mick in the following episodes after his re-turning. Good job!

Your Mick is a complex man, one who had choices made for him, but ones he adapted to....with Beth in his life, he has reinvented himself, but this most telling.
At last, he's finally accepted what is he.I’m still a vampire.

Totally agree.
In Fated to Pretend, he finally encountered a situation that caused him to choose vampirism to attain a goal that was, for him, more important that his temporary humanity.
He had been reminded of the painfulf aspects of mortality, and I think he had made the unconscious decision to forget those parts.
As he told Beth on the rooftop after rescuing her, 'he didn't have any regrets.'
I think that Beth finally got him to face the possibility that he may get his happily ever after, after all. It would not come easy, and there would be a lot of barriers to overcome, but isn't that always true?
Thanks!

Re: Mick (Short) Rating: G Pairing: Mick/Beth
Jen, this is the strongest of Mick I have ever read. Sincere and open as men get only in front of their mirror, maybe not even then.. And he sees Beth in a perspective that I may not really like- I do love him when he is overwhelmed by her- but it feels more logical like that.
Thank you
Thank you

Thank you so much for reading!
Mick is very much in love and he is a realist. While Coraline made him an unwilling participant in vampiric existence, Beth has made his life worth living.
Thank you for reading and leaving the lovely comment!
