Alex's IMDb STARmeter - 2

I thought I'd start our second thread for Alex's STARmeter scores with a recap....

IMDb has a popularity ranking known as STARmeter. It's really just a measure of the "buzz" surrounding a personality or a project.

IMDb's description is: "STARmeter rankings provide a snapshot of who's popular based on the searches of millions of IMDb users. Updated weekly, these rankings also graph the popularity of people over time and determine which events affect public awareness."


Alex's STARmeter hit an all time "high" the week after The Back-up Plan opened. (Actually, the lower the number the better the score.)

2010 Apr 25 -- #23

For point of reference, here are some other highlights...

2010 Feb 14 -- #434 - Alex O'Loughlin to star in 'Hawaii Five-0'
2009 Dec 06 -- #1003 - Three Rivers: A Roll of the Dice
2009 Oct 04 -- #750 - Three Rivers: Place of Life
2009 Sep 13 -- #663 - Whiteout
2009 May 03 -- #345 - Criminal Minds: The Big Wheel

The best score he had during Moonlight's run was: 235, the week "B.C." aired.

The week before Moonlight premiered, his score was 2367.


These numbers vary widely from week to week depending on how much "buzz" is going on. But, it's fun to see how much interest is being generated.

One note: This data is only available to IMDb Pro accounts. I'd appreciate it if this info was not copied elsewhere -- it's for our own entertainment here on MLA.

Thanks Lilly for reposting how this whole star meter thing works.

It is amazing when you see where his score was prior to ML compared to now.

A question: when there are all those silly polls where people vote repeatedly for him, does that affect his star meter score at all? I guess it would if people saw his name in a poll and decided to search for him on IDMB. But I just wondered if other Internet activity affects the score at all.

Good question about those polls... There is one on now, Alex vs. Joe the werewolf w/the loooon name that I can't spell. Vote if you will...

I dunno if it impacts imdb, but Alex was surprised to hear he had won one of em, so the stars probs have no idea.

My understanding of it, Fleur, is that ONLY IMDb searches (page hits) count toward the score. The articles cited, I think, are just an indicator of what may have had an effect on the week's score. Polls would have no bearing on the score --except, as you said, if a poll caused a lot of folks to go check him out on IMDb.

I'm starting to think that the 700-1000 range is where he's settled for now and that his result is as much a function of other peoples' buzz as it is of his own. With the new television season, I'm guessing many of the new faces are attracting curious eyes, whereas Alex, at this point, is a known quantity.
