Cold Heart


Beth had been trudging through knee-deep snow for the past mile. Now she stood at the crest of the hill looking down at the cabin. The lights shining out of the windows and the wisp of smoke curling up from the chimney were a warm invitation.

She shivered as the cold wind whipped around her and tucked her chin down into the collar of Mick’s coat. She had heard him say “you can’t” so loudly in her head that it drowned out “because I love you” hidden underneath. In a fit of fury she shouted words she now regretted as she grabbed the nearest coat off the hook by the door and stormed out into the snow. When she realized it was Mick’s coat her stubborn pride had refused to let her go back inside. Now his scent enveloped her like a warm blanket and she felt the icy fingers of anger that had gripped her heart melt away. He was only trying to protect her. She knew that just as surely as she knew he had already forgiven her and would be awaiting her return with a hot cup of cocoa.

Beth headed down the hill and Mick met her at the door.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“I love you,” he replied.

Why, thank you everyone! I originally thought I could do this in a 100 word drabble. But sometimes the muse just grabs on and won't let go until all the words come out. And then she wouldn't let me cut it in half.

Lovely, MLC. I can see Beth up there, making a face, sighing, and returning to the cabin. She's quick to explode and saying hurtful things. But she can't resist that vamp. And I think Mick would forgive her just about anything.
